He Rejected My Call While I Was Dying – Sneak Peek
Seven days. That’s how long a person can survive without water, or so they say. It’s also how long my fiancé, Stellan Graves, took to remember I existed.
When my phone finally rang with his name on the screen, I felt nothing. That surprised me more than the call itself.
“What madness are you up to, Iris Lark?” His voice hit me before I could even say hello. “Both families have already agreed on the wedding venue and date, and you just calmly decide to cancel it? What kind of trouble are you trying to cause?”
I opened my mouth. He kept going.
“I’ve told you a thousand times—Nyx’s health is extremely fragile. A simple cold for her could turn into an emergency, so I need to be with her to make sure nothing happens. Why are you so jealous? Don’t you care about another person’s vulnerable life?”
Another person’s vulnerable life.
I almost laughed. Not quite—laughing hurt too much, what with the fractured ribs and the bruises that painted my torso in shades of purple no one would ever call beautiful. A week earlier, while walking home alone after finalizing our wedding details—his wedding details, technically, since I was the only one who ever dealt with them—a truck ran a red light and found me instead of the open road. The driver backed up and hit me again, just to be thorough.
With what little strength I had before the world went black, I called Stellan. My fingers left red smears across the screen.
He rejected the call.
I called again. He rejected it again.

The last thing I saw before losing consciousness was his text notification glowing through the blood on my screen:
“What’s going on? Say it quickly!”
Followed by another, seconds later:
“Are you crazy? Why do you have to interrupt me right now when I’m taking care of Nyx? Don’t you know that if she gets upset, it could be fatal?”
Fatal. He loved that word when it came to Nyx. A hangnail on Nyx Thorn was a national emergency. Meanwhile, I was lying in a puddle of my own blood on a dark street, and all I warranted was an impatient text.
I woke to the sterile smell of hospital sheets and Stellan’s voice still ringing through my phone speaker, still lecturing me about my deficiencies as a human being. But before I could register what he was saying, the door burst open.
Dagny Briar—my best friend, my furious, magnificent best friend—crossed the room in three strides and snatched the phone from my hands like she was confiscating a weapon.
“Stellan!” Her voice could have stripped paint. “Do you have any idea what happened to Iris last night? She suffered a fatal car accident—she was run over twice. If she hadn’t received medical attention in time, she wouldn’t be here anymore. Can you tell the difference between a common cold and a woman nearly dying?”
Silence on the other end. Then a laugh—short, sharp, dripping with condescension.
