Reborn to Reject My Alpha. I Chose His Uncle- Sneak Peek
The Moon Dance smelled the same as always—woodsmoke and honey wine and the particular nervous sweat of wolves trying to impress each other. Nothing had changed. Or rather: everything had changed, except the smell.
I stood at the edge of the dance floor and looked around. The great stone altar gleamed at the center, pale under the moonlight, drowning in offerings nobody would touch until morning. Behind it, the Ferris wheel turned in its slow, patient revolution, its empty cabins swaying in the dark. I’d ridden it every year since I was nine years old, always with my heart in my throat, always hoping Soren would sit beside me.
Old habit. The kind that dies only once you’ve lived enough to know better.
I spotted him before he spotted me. He was leaning against an oak tree with a silver goblet tilted carelessly in one hand, spinning some story for the group around him. Hunting, probably—he always led with hunting. His friends were laughing on cue, which was the role of Soren’s friends: to laugh on cue.
Then Torben Flint saw me.
“Hey, Soren! Your little tail just walked in!”
The laughter erupted, open and ugly. Torben had always been exactly as funny as he believed he was, which is to say, not very.
“Fable,” he continued, warming to his own joke, “you’re already engaged to the man. Do you really have to follow him around too?”
Soren turned. His eyes landed on me with the particular expression of someone being interrupted by something they’d decided not to think about. He crossed the distance between us in a few steps and dropped his voice, which meant he wanted to wound me without an audience.

“Are you really this desperate?” The contempt was practiced, comfortable, worn smooth from use. “You went ahead and decided on the engagement without a single word to me, and now everyone’s talking about how you’re joining my family. What kind of woman does that?”
In my previous life, those words had worked. I’d spent years trying to soften that contempt into something that looked like love.
I looked him in the eyes. “Soren, I don’t need to consult you about anything. You won’t be my husband.”
For one second, nothing moved.
Then the whole floor collapsed into laughter. Even Torben gave up whatever he’d been building and doubled over. “Man!” he wheezed at Soren. “Get your she-wolf under control!”
Soren’s expression shifted—the easy contempt replaced by something harder, with edges.
“Playing disinterest now?” His voice had dropped further, into the hunter’s register. “You arranged this union with the Riveras yourself. If not me, who exactly were you planning to marry?” He stepped closer. “Everyone already considers you mine. I’ll give you the wedding you want. I’ll be generous. But my mark—” a pause, deliberate—”goes only to my true mate.”
