Chapter 452:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
My heart melted. “That’s unfair. You can’t say things like that when I’m already emotional.”
He smiled, and I leaned forward and kissed him. It was gentle, nothing like the desperation of the night before. When we pulled apart, his forehead rested against mine.
A low grunt escaped him as another wave of fever tried to rise. He pressed his forehead to mine, breathing through it.
“By evening I’ll be stronger,” he promised. “Say your goodbyes today. I don’t want anyone knocking for the next two days. I have plans for just the two of us in the woods. I’ll make sure we have everything we need. Once we reach the cabin, no one is stepping outside until I say so.”
My entire face caught fire. I could feel the blush climbing all the way to my ears.
Two days, Parrot whispered, delighted. Locked in a cabin with the Dark Alpha King and no curse. We’re going to die. Happily.
I leaned in and kissed him, soft and certain, tasting the promise on his mouth. “Sure, Dark Alpha King,” I murmured against his lips. “You’d better rest. You’re going to need every bit of strength before we leave.”
Then the door opened, and we both turned.

Gemma stood there. She looked at Nero, then at me, then at the ring on my finger. Her eyes narrowed. “No one is going anywhere.”
Nero slowly straightened. “Excuse me?”
Gemma pointed at him. “You heard me, Dark Alpha.”
Oh, this is going to be interesting, Parrot whispered inside my head.
Remi POV
“No one is going anywhere.”
Gemma stood in the doorway with her arms folded, staring at both of us as if she had just caught us planning to rob the entire Free Lands.
Nero slowly straightened. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.” She pointed at him. “You are not leaving this house, let alone traveling, in the condition you’re in.”
She gave him a look that made even the Dark Alpha King go quiet for a second. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing. Parrot was already enjoying herself. She runs a strict program.
Nero glanced at me. “Are you going to let her gang up on me?”
I shrugged innocently. “You’re the one who said you would be fine.”
His eyes narrowed.
Gemma stepped farther into the room. “And even if you were perfectly healthy, you still wouldn’t be leaving.”
Nero’s expression hardened. “Gemma.”
“No. You listen to me for once.” She pointed toward the window, toward the Free Lands beyond it. “Your father came here years ago. He made promises to these people. He promised them an Alpha. He promised them protection. He promised them that he would return.”
Nero’s jaw tightened.
“He never did,” Gemma continued. “He abandoned the Free Lands and went back to his kingdom. You know what happened afterward. We survived because we had no other choice.”
I watched Nero carefully. The mention of his father always changed something in him.
