Chapter 463:

His eyes searched mine. “She could be useful. Hell, she may save our lives someday.”
“Don’t encourage her.”
He laughed. I pushed lightly against his chest. “Fine. She can come to Moonstone.”
His smile widened.
Caya had barely vanished into the darkness when I felt a small tug of guilt. I glanced at Nero. He was watching me with that knowing expression. “What?”
I sighed. “Bring her back.”

His eyebrow lifted. “Excuse me?”
“She shouldn’t be walking around alone at this hour.”
“Remi…”
“I know what you’re going to say.” I pointed toward the door. “But it’s dark, she’s exhausted, and she just traveled all this way. If something happens to her out there, I’ll feel terrible.”
Parrot snorted. You mean you’ll feel terrible because you don’t want her haunting our honeymoon as a ghost.
I ignored her.
Nero stared at me a moment longer before a slow smile appeared on his face. I crossed my arms. “Go get her.”
The moment he disappeared into the darkness, I stayed near the doorway, listening. The forest was quiet. Too quiet. A few seconds passed. Then I heard voices, Nero’s low one first, followed by Caya’s. I couldn’t make out what they were saying. Then their footsteps returned.
Caya appeared first, her bag hanging from one shoulder. Nero walked behind her, looking far too amused. She stopped when she saw me. “I thought you wanted me gone.”
I lifted my chin. “I changed my mind.”
“That’s convenient.”
“Don’t make me change it again.”
She laughed softly and walked past me. As she entered, she looked around the cabin before glancing back at me. “Thank you.”
The sincerity in her voice caught me off guard. I nodded. “Just for tonight.”
“Understood.”
She moved toward the small sitting area. I expected her to sit quietly and keep to herself. Instead, she turned to Nero. “You should probably tell her.”
Nero’s expression changed. I looked between them. “Tell me what?”
Nero sighed. “Not tonight.” His fingers moved through my hair. A tiny raindrop clung to one of the strands, and he brushed it away with his thumb. “You’re getting wet.” He leaned closer. “Come inside.”
The warmth that spread through my chest had nothing to do with the fire in the cabin. I leaned closer and kissed him.
Then something cold brushed across my skin.
I pulled away. Nero noticed immediately. “What?”
I looked toward the forest. Nothing. The trees stood quietly in the distance, their leaves moving gently in the wind.
“What is it?” Nero asked, studying my face. “Remi.”
I rubbed my arms. A strange chill had settled over my skin. It wasn’t the cold of the rain. It was something else, something I couldn’t explain. Parrot had gone unusually quiet, and that frightened me more than the feeling itself.
I looked at the forest again. “I just… I have a bad feeling.”
His expression changed. “What kind of feeling?”
Another chill moved over my skin. I stared into the darkness beyond the trees, but there was nothing there. No movement. No sound.
