Chapter 534:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
I wasn’t under the naive illusion that those goons would release us by some stroke of conscience, so what they had said didn’t surprise me.
I kept my cool and was about to get up and walk around. Luther easily caught my movements and pointed the gun at me with a cold smile.
“Stand still. Don’t even think of making a single move. I couldn’t outrun you because of my wound, but I doubt you’re fast enough to escape a bullet from my gun.”
I had no choice but to do as he said. Luther pointed at Ady again.
“You too. One move and I shoot.”
The two men who had gone to deliver the message had not yet returned. A good bit of time had already elapsed, and Luther sent two more men to go take a look. They seemed reluctant to leave him alone, but Luther gestured to play with his gun like a little boy with a beloved toy.
“Don’t worry. There are more than enough bullets here to finish them off.” He gave us a cocky look, uttering the threat.
Apparently convinced of his words, the two men fell. Only Luther, Ady, the two hostages and I were left on top of the mountain.
I stood still, clinging to the grass at my feet and watching Luther out of the corner of my eye. The winds were blowing hard at this altitude, but with his shirt unbuttoned, Luther didn’t seem to feel the cold.
He leaned against a small mound of dirt, letting it support half his weight. For a moment, he had been quiet, his face serious as if in a watchful attitude.
Another while passed without any of the men who had come down showing signs of life. As if it had dawned on him, Luther tried to sit up, but realized that his body was not listening to him.
Traces of panic began to cloud his features. He turned his head sharply and narrowed his eyes as he looked at me.
He removed the needle from the back of his hand, tugging at me as he did so.
“You bitch! How dare you set me up!” I knew the anesthesia had already taken effect. Even his grip didn’t have much strength.
I tried to pull back and resist, and Ady soon followed. A shot rang out, and the smell of gunpowder wafted through the air. Ady fell to one knee, his wounded leg unable to support him.

I had miscalculated.
The next moment, I felt one hand around my neck as Luther pointed the other at me. I could only gasp as I felt the air leave me.
After the gunshot, a sudden noise filled the place. Soon, a group of police rushed up the mountain, with Luther’s men bound in handcuffs.
“One more step and I’ll blow his brains out!” Luther shouted, placing the muzzle of the gun right on my forehead.
The officers stopped. None dared to take another step. Luther had shifted our position so that I was blocking his body. It would be too dangerous for the cops to shoot now.
Alvaro stepped forward from behind, his eyes darting to the kneeling Ady and then to me. Despite the distance, I could sense his nervousness.
“Luther, please don’t hurt her.” Luther let out an unhinged laugh, as if he didn’t care at all about the situation he was in.
“Alvaro, are you worried about her?”.
At his sides, Alvaro’s hands clenched into tight fists. Luther snorted.
“Isn’t it unbelievable? Your ex-wife and your current girlfriend are here. Tell me, who do you care more about, how do you feel about your ex-wife coming here and taking your girlfriend’s place?”
“Okay,” Ady said weakly and tried to stand up, her legs shakily supporting her weight. A crimson wet spot had soaked through the fabric of her pants.
“No!” shouted Alvaro. He turned to Luther, looking at him with an expression he had never seen before.
“Luther, let her go. I’ll be your hostage.”
Luther’s smile turned wicked.
“Okay, but first you have to answer one question.”
“Okay.”
“Was it you who betrayed Barlow?” Luther’s voice was stripped of all its manic humor, his tone turning cold with hatred.
Alvaro continued to watch him, giving no immediate response.
“If you dare lie to me, I’ll make you watch your wife’s head explode before your very eyes,” Luther spat at him.
One of the officers tried to intervene.
“Luther, you have no way back, stop resisting and calmly surrender.”
Luther snorted, scoffing at the cop’s words. “If I’m going down, I’m taking at least one person with me” He then threw a knife at Alvaro’s feet. “You want your wife back? Cut off one of your fingers first. Then, I’ll let her go.”
