Chapter 539:.
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
We found a quiet booth and sat down together with the wine we had ordered.
“Lulu, how have you been?” I asked.
She took a sip of the wine, put the glass down and calmly replied, “Everything is going well for me.”
It was obvious that she did not wish to talk about her life in any more detail. It seemed we had both lived enough in the last two years. We would never be able to chat and laugh in the carefree way we had before.
“Eve, I really have great admiration for you. From the bottom of my heart, I am so glad you are so successful,” Louise said.
I looked at her sadly. “Lulu, why weren’t you willing to get in touch with me?”. Louise said nothing for a long time.
After an excessively long pause, she finally pulled a necklace out of her pocket. It was exactly the same as the one I had given her. However, the pendant was missing.
“Eve, you gave me this necklace. I never took it off, not even when I showered or when I slept. I didn’t want to take it off, because it was a gift from you. But last year, when I was walking down the street, the chain broke and so did the pendant. Even though it was broken, I wanted to keep it. But I found something strange about the pendant.” He pulled out a small bag.
Inside was a small device that looked like some kind of electronic chip. “What is this?” I asked her.
She replied, “At the time, out of pure curiosity, I asked a knowledgeable person. He told me it was a tracking chip.”
I was perplexed. “A tracking chip?”
Louise smiled faintly as she saw the look of genuine horror on my face.
“So you’ve had information withheld from you too, have you? Look, I don’t think you’re the one behind this. However, I absolutely believe for a fact that Derek was behind this. Layne and I had been hiding in a secret hideout. He said it was quite difficult to find us there. However, the police managed to locate our whereabouts quite easily.”
I was too stunned to string together a sentence in response. I remembered that Derek had given me that necklace to give to Louise. I didn’t really think anything of it. I really thought that since I hadn’t helped her father, I had bought her a gift to express how sorry I was.
“Lulu, I really don’t know anything about this. And in my eyes, Derek has always been just a businessman. I’m sorry. You must hate my guts, huh? You can berate me, even hit me if you want. I’m sorry I provoked Layne’s arrest.”

Louise couldn’t help but laugh, picked up the glass of wine and downed it in one gulp.
“What reason do you have to apologize to me? It’s common knowledge that you can’t escape the long arm of the law. In any case, although Layne committed many atrocities that harmed numerous people, he did nothing wrong to me. He risked his life to be good to me, and I will never be able to repay him in my lifetime.”
When Layne was caught and arrested, it was a very hard moment for Louise. After that, she was unable to lead a quiet life.
“Lulu, so you don’t hate me or blame me? But then, why hadn’t you tried to contact me for the past two years?”
Louise snapped her fingers and asked the waiter to pour us more wine.
“I didn’t blame you. I just didn’t know how I could cope with you. If I blamed you, I wouldn’t have come to see you now.” My nose twitched.
I intertwined my arm with his and leaned against his shoulder.
“Lulu, did you come expressly to see me?”
He poked my forehead with his finger. “What do you think? I heard about what happened to Derek. Of course I knew you’d be depressed. I’m worried about you, so I came to see you,” she said.
I sank my face into her shoulder and her clothes became damp with my tears.
“Lulu, thank you. If you didn’t talk to me and ignored me, I wouldn’t know what to do.” Louise smiled sadly.
“Eve, you married a drug cop and I married a drug dealer. That’s fate. God’s disposition is very cruel. If we still hate each other, it means we’re asking for more trouble, isn’t it? We were such good friends, but fate wants us to break our relationship. We should never let anyone take control of our own destiny.”
Louise was still making comments in a totally unrestrained manner, as she usually did. Meanwhile, I had been crying so hard I couldn’t talk.
That night we drank a lot. We laughed out loud, as if we had temporarily forgotten all the sadness and pain that enveloped our lives.
For the moment, we were alone, but we kept each other company. We seemed to have returned to the past. At that time, we were still single and very carefree. We hadn’t suffered such harsh tribulations, and we didn’t experience the heartbreaking relationship a woman had with a man.
We staggered out of the bar with each other’s help and managed to catch a cab. I drove her back home.
