Chapter 541:.
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Alvaro leaned back in his chair, tilted his head, smiled and said half-jokingly, “If we get married, they’ll give us a marriage certificate. You know, it’s effectively nothing more than a piece of paper. If we don’t, then we don’t get that piece of paper. That’s pretty much the only difference. Your children will have a father, and you know they need a father. I promise I won’t force you to sleep with me.”
“Alvaro!” I looked at him with an air of resignation.
He shrugged and smiled bitterly, “Well, I was joking anyway. I know you don’t need me, though. Well then, I’m off!”.
The meal was rather unpleasant. There seemed to be a kind of heavy sadness floating in the air. It flowed into the dishes and stimulated our taste buds in a negative way.
After dinner, I did the dishes and when I came back from the kitchen, Alvaro was sitting on the couch. There was a faint smoke floating in front of him. At that moment the two nannies came downstairs with my children in their arms.
Alvaro immediately put out his cigarette and walked towards them. The twins had known him for a long time and were very familiar with him. They opened their arms, reaching out to him from a distance. It was clear they wanted to hug him.
Alvaro squatted down, hugged the two children and kissed their faces affectionately. His true feelings could not be disguised. He really loved the two children with all his heart.
Alvaro let go of the children and they soon went off to play with their toys. The children’s world was simple. There were not so many painful things for them. It was easy for them to always be happy. Even when I asked them to say goodbye to Alvaro, they were bubbly and cheerful.
Their greetings were superficial. They felt no sadness in saying goodbye.
I watched Alvaro leave. Outside it was snowing heavily. Snowflakes swirled in the sky like a myriad of feathers. Soon, thousands of snowflakes fell on Álvaro’s hair. I figured he must have been in the same situation.
When he reached his car, he turned around and said half-jokingly, “Why don’t you kiss me goodbye?” Although he was smiling, I could clearly perceive the sadness in his smile.
When he realized I wasn’t answering his question, he said, “At least give me a hug goodbye.”
He walked over to me and hugged me tenderly. This hug was not as masterful and passionate as before, nor did it have an undertone of lustful desire. It only showed his reluctance to part from me.
After hugging me for quite a while, he let go. He gently brushed the snowflakes out of my hair and said in a soft voice, “Take care of yourself.” I nodded my head.

I stood there for quite a while as I watched his car drive away. I knew I owed him more than just a finger, but I could never repay him in life. After putting on a thick down coat, I braved the wind and snow and visited the Martyrs’ Cemetery.
The ground was covered with snow and had become a vast expanse of whiteness. In fact, I had been dreaming that Derek would return and appear before me someday. But as time passed, I had no choice but to accept the hard truth.
He had truly abandoned our children and me. He was not coming back. As I entered the cemetery with the flowers in my arms, I saw in the distance a figure standing in the wind and snow. It was none other than Felix.
I placed the flowers reverently in front of the tombstone and plucked up the courage to look at the photo on it. In one glance, my heart ached with anguish.
In the photo, Derek looked so handsome and young. But the reality was that he was really dead. He would never come back.
“So far, I’ve discovered that I’ve never really known my friend,” Felix said.
A bitter laugh floated through the wind and snow. I stood up and looked at the headstone, heartbroken.
“I don’t think anyone really knew him. Only he knew what kind of mission he was undertaking, so no one could understand the anguish he endured. Only he could bear it by himself until the day came when he could bear it no longer. It was sad that he had never been truly understood.”
With his hands in his pockets, Felix stared at the gravestone. He seemed to have mixed feelings, but in the end all he did was sigh heavily. He didn’t leave until his shoulders and hair were completely covered with snow.
I lingered a while longer by the grave before leaving. The New Year was fast approaching. I decided to go to the supermarket alone. Everyone was carrying numerous New Year’s gifts. Their faces were full of joy.
However, their joy made me a little sad. I was alone and felt totally desolate. I walked through the supermarket with a blank stare and seemed to forget what I had gone shopping for.
I passed by the clothing section. The clothes were on sale. Many old ladies were picking out garments. Suddenly, I saw Becky in the crowd of women.
