Chapter 543:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Becky pulled out a tissue and used it to wipe her tears. As she sniffled, she said, “We had only met a couple of times before we got married. The truth is, I don’t know him very well. When we got married, he was very nice to me. But in less than a month, his feelings for me became stale. He was always going out drinking late at night. And when he was drunk, he would hit me. He didn’t even treat me like a human being.”
I remembered the day Becky arrived at Jolly Mayer Company’s main store. At that time, she was acting haughty. So, I never thought she led a miserable life after marrying a rich man.
She no longer bothered to wipe her tears, smiled bitterly and said, “I used to be so antagonistic to you. Surely you’re glad to see me like this, huh?”.
I looked her in the eyes and shook my head.
“No, it doesn’t make me happy. I feel sad for Derek. He put a lot of time and effort into helping you realize your dream, but you didn’t work hard enough and even ruined your own career. Be honest, did you really marry your husband for love? I don’t think so. I think you only married him for your vanity.”
If this had happened in the past, my comment would have warranted a sarcastic remark from her. But to my surprise, it didn’t.
Tears were still streaming down her face. The rims of her eyes and the tip of her nose had reddened from crying.
“I deserve what’s happening to me. I thought I would live a comfortable life after marrying a rich man. A few days ago, he brought home a woman openly. I got so angry that I argued with him. During the argument, he told me that he would freeze all my bank cards. I thought he was just saying that, but I didn’t expect him to be so ruthless as to do that. I bought this down jacket for my mother. And now, I’m facing financial problems. If I want to buy things for my mother, I have to be subservient to him. I’m afraid to buy expensive clothes because he will check my accounts. If he finds out I spend too much money, he will scold me again.”
As I held the coffee cup in my hand, I sighed.
“That’s why women should never lose their livelihood for any reason.” Becky lowered her head, visibly dejected.
“It’s been so long since I last worked on a movie. I don’t even think I have a chance to play an extra anymore.”
“From now on, try not to be so cocky. Don’t see yourself above everyone else. You can always start from scratch, and that’s not a bad thing. A lot of A-list stars started their career working as extras. Go back to the beginning and start from scratch. Be brave and work hard. I’m sure you can bounce back,” I advised her.
Becky raised her head, staring at me as tears continued to fall from her eyes. I put some money on the table, picked up my purse and left.
It was freezing outside when I left the cafeteria. The cold made me instinctively huddle in my coat. In my opinion, people weren’t afraid of starting over, what they were afraid of was not having enough courage to do so. I was courageous enough to start over.

But, unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to do so. If I could start over, I would have nothing to fear. I would not worry about trivial things.
If God would be kind enough to send Derek back to me, I would trade it all to have him back. Unfortunately, the chance to start over was a luxury I didn’t have.
On New Year’s Eve, Aaron invited his friends over to his house for dinner. I knew he just wanted to distract me from my overwhelming sadness. And I must admit, it was a lively dinner. Lean, Tina, Eric and Megan came.
I thought Alvaro was also alone, so I asked him to come too. Fortunately, he hadn’t left Sousen yet. None of us mentioned anything unpleasant during dinner.
It was as if we had all lost part of our memory and had forgotten someone. But I could never forget him. As lively as this reunion dinner was, without him, my heart felt empty.
After dinner, I stood outside the living room, watching the snow fall. From far away, I could hear the sound of fireworks. Their mere sound brought back a distant memory. That’s when I went back to the living room to grab my bag and left the house.
Everyone chased after me, but I had already gotten into the car. I knew they were worried about me, so I forced a smile to reassure them.
“Don’t worry. I’m just going somewhere. Nothing bad will happen.”
