Chapter 544:.
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
There were very few cars along the road. By now, people must have returned to their respective homes for their family reunions. Contrary to everyone’s plans, I was now driving anxiously as if I was in a hurry to get to an appointment.
I drove to Dere International. The security guard on duty knew who I was, so he let me in. At that moment, the company building was empty. I went straight to the roof. Once there, I stood at the railing, looking down on the city.
I remembered what New Year’s Eve had been like that year. We were right here, watching the fireworks, when the New Year’s Eve bell rang, and we hugged and kissed and welcomed in the new year.
Derek told me that we would celebrate New Year’s Eve right here every year.
“Derek, you promised me you would be here with me every year. Well, I’m here now, but where are you?”.
At that moment, fireworks were launched from almost every direction. The sky was filled with fireworks of different colors. My vision starts to blur.
Despite the festive atmosphere given off by the fireworks, I still felt sad. I missed him so much. I missed him terribly.
“Derek, can you come back, please? I miss you so much.”
On the empty rooftop, tears streamed down my face as the city buzzed with emotion.
Suddenly, the iron door to the rooftop was pushed open.
I figured no one would come this way, considering everyone was probably at home celebrating a family reunion.
Slowly, I turned around and stared at the open door. I felt a strong hunch in the pit of my stomach; or maybe it would be better to call it a fantastic anticipation. But whatever it was, the feeling made me nervous.
As I stared at the door, the first thing I saw was a crutch, followed by a leather shoe and a long leg in suit pants.
When the tall man finally appeared, my eyes shot open. My heart skipped a beat. And for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Slowly, he turned his gaze toward me. Behind him, splendid fireworks lit up the night.

Tonight he was wearing a black suit. His beautiful face was even more beautiful than any of those fireworks. His image was so ethereal that I felt entranced.
Was I hallucinating, was it because I longed for him?
I didn’t dare move, let alone approach him. I even tried not to breathe for fear of waking up from this beautiful dream.
All around, fireworks were being launched one after another. But even their loud noise was not enough to drown out the sound of my pounding heartbeat. The person I had been longing for day and night was finally before my eyes.
And at that moment, my heart was beating like a drum.
With the help of his crutch, he walked towards me. It was hard for him to reach me, but he was determined to make it. If this were a dream, it would be strange that the tears in my eyes seemed so real.
Also, his loving gaze seemed so real at that moment. About two meters away from me, he finally stopped dead in his tracks and we stood looking into each other’s eyes. I didn’t dare speak, fearing that this fantastic dream would end.
When he pressed his lips together and swallowed saliva, he finally mustered the strength to speak.
“I once promised you that we would celebrate New Year’s Eve together on this rooftop. I never forgot that promise.”
Hearing those words, tears ran down my eyes like a broken dam. When he saw me cry, he nearly did too.
“Am I too late?” he asked me, his voice slightly cracking.
I plucked up my courage and walked over to him. Right now I was feeling excited, but I proceeded cautiously. When I stopped in front of him, I stared at him, unblinking. With trembling hands, I touched his arm. It was not a dream.
It was real.
“It’s not too late,” I said hoarsely as tears welled up in my eyes again.
He touched my face and wiped away my tears. But then, her own tears ran down her cheeks. Her palm was hot and her tears, even hotter, fell on my face.
“You’re back, huh?” I paused many times before I finished the sentence. I tried to speak as clearly as I could, but I couldn’t control the tears that were falling.
“Yes. Here I am,” he said softly. He stroked my face and looked into my eyes.
I bit my trembling lips. Unable to control my emotions, I clung to his arms.
“Why didn’t you come back sooner? Why didn’t you come back until you broke my heart? Why, Derek? Why?” At that moment, his crutch fell to the floor. Because he was hugging me, he couldn’t hold himself steady, which caused him to fall backwards. “Derek!” I shouted.
