Chapter 197:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Kelly’s POV
I sucked in a breath as I started panting. I sniffed and swallowed hard, realizing nothing had pierced my skin. I wasn’t shot. But who had been?
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought of one possible reason why there was no bullet wound in me. Slowly, with my heart racing and aching, I turned around, praying that Pierce was safe, hoping that he was still unconscious.
My lips parted as I cupped my mouth when I saw what had happened behind me. Connor was lifeless, lying on the ground. He had a gunshot wound between his eyes, and… Klay was standing in front of me. I was facing his back, and he was slowly falling to his knees.

“Klay!” I exclaimed, gasping as I caught him. He was heavy, and we both fell to the ground together.
My lips parted again, trembling as he looked at me and coughed blood. The rain continued pouring heavily, as though it were comforting me. My eyes watered again as I stared at his face.
“K-Klay…” My heart felt suffocated as I looked at him.
He had managed to kill Connor Foster, but he’d been shot too—on his lower left chest.
I shook my head when his forehead rested on my shoulder, and he forced his arm to lift and touch my waist.
“I-I came on time,” he whispered.
“Klay, hold on. We’ll ask for help—”
“Shh!” he whispered. He was too weak to carry his own weight and was already leaning on me.
“Emily… is in the hospital.”
I lifted my trembling hand and gently touched the back of his head. “I’ll bring you to the hospital.”
“It’s t-time…” he groaned in pain, coughing up blood again. “…for me to… g-go.”
I shook my head angrily. “No! No, Klay! You can’t die like this! You’re still going to pay for your sins. In prison! In prison, Klay!”
“I-I’m sorry…” he whispered. “I d-don’t wanna be in p-prison.”
“Klay…”
He was struggling. “This is what I b-bargained for, K-Kelly. My life for y-yours…” he coughed again, suffocating me even more.
“Don’t say that…” I sobbed.
“I’ve loved you… from then… until now,” he sobbed. “I love only you… and I-I didn’t regret anything other than hurting you…”
I swallowed hard. “H-How can you make up for your sins if you’ll leave?”
He lifted his face and looked at me. My heart shattered even more when he smiled at me—the smile he gave me when he saved me before. The smile that reassured me that I was safe, and he was here to protect me, no matter what.
I bit my bottom lip as he forced his arm to lift again, his bloodied fingers gently touching my cheek. I gasped and cried uncontrollably when he closed his eyes, and his hand fell to my lap.
The Start of Forever
“Klay! Klay! Wake up, Klay!” I called desperately, tapping his cheeks gently.
He didn’t move or open his eyes again. His full weight was on me, and I knew he was gone. He was gone. I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t calm down. I didn’t want to see dead bodies. It felt like I was dying every time I saw the lifeless bodies of the people I once treasured.
“K-Kelly…”
I lifted my face and looked at Pierce as he sat beside me. He glanced at Klay in my arms before squeezing his eyes closed and pulling me closer to him. He buried my head on his chest and hugged me tightly, comforting me. I found myself crying so hard in his arms, while still holding Klay’s lifeless and bloody body.
“H-He sacrificed his life for me, Pierce…” I cried. “He should be paying for his sins, not like this! He can’t die like this!”
Pierce didn’t say anything. He just held me tight, and I could only cry my heart out in so much pain, anger, and disappointment.
I don’t know what happened after that. All I knew was that I started to tremble in the cold, and then I lost consciousness from exhaustion. My body felt so tired, and I just wanted to close my eyes and rest.
The warmth of sunlight and the smell of medicine were what woke me up the next day. I slowly opened my eyes, and the memories of the previous night flooded my mind. Losing Klay that way was painful and disappointing. I wanted him to pay, to rot in jail, but I couldn’t deny that even though I hated him for all the things he had done to me, I still felt the pain of his death.
“Kelly…”
I turned my head toward the voice. Pierce entered the room. He had bandages around his head, and I immediately panicked.
“What happened to you?” I asked, but then I paused as the memories of what had happened to him flooded my mind.
He sat on the bed beside me and pressed the button by my hospital bed. He held my hand and kissed the back of it.
“How are you feeling? Are you okay? How’s your head? You were hit by Diane Foster.”
I caressed my forehead and realized that, just like him, I had a bandage around my head.
“I’m fine,” I said, looking at him. “How about our baby?”
He smiled. “The baby’s strong. You protected our baby.”
He smiled. “And you protected me.”
He pulled me closer to him and hugged me. The door swung open while we were embracing, and the nurse entered to check on me. I sat on the bed, holding Pierce’s hand, until the nurse finished checking my vitals.
“Where’s Matt and Mason?” I asked once the nurse left. “And Emily? How is she?”
“Matt’s wound had complications. He needed to stay in the ICU for a few days. Mason is in the next room, and Emily is there too. The doctor told me there’s a possibility her memories might not come back.”
I sucked in a breath and nodded. “A-And… Klay?”
Pierce clenched his jaw. “I had him cremated. I laid his ashes next to his mom’s. You can visit him once you recover.”
I bit my bottom lip and nodded. “I will visit him once I’m discharged.”
The Start of Forever
He nodded. “I’ll go with you.”
A deafening silence filled the room. I stared at Pierce, feeling a wave of worry. I couldn’t help but think about how this mess started—and how it would finally end. I needed to make sure it was really over. I needed peace, and I had to reassure myself that we could finally get the happy ending we’d been seeking.
“It’s over, right?” I asked after a few moments of silence.
I swallowed hard as he intertwined our fingers and nodded at me. He smiled softly. “Yes. Finally.”
I smiled and took a deep breath. “Finally…”
I looked at Pierce, smiling wider now. He leaned closer to me, resting our foreheads together. With his free hand, he caressed my cheek before tilting his head, his lips finding mine for a soft, brief kiss.
“This is the start of our peaceful forever,” he whispered, before kissing me again—this time, I responded with the same intensity of affection.
Indeed, I believed that this was the start of our peaceful forever. With him. With our family and friends.
I know we can’t erase the pain we’ve inflicted on each other. I know it’s hard to forget the suffering we’ve gone through. But with those painful memories, I believe we can cross the bridge toward happiness. Even with the baggage of a painful past, we can get through it, and we’ll find the peace we’ve been longing for.
This is the start of our peaceful forever, and I hope that even in our next life, we’ll find each other. Because for me, he’s the only one who can give me the happiness I’ve always wanted.
