Kole never complained. He had no desires left, no pride, and no ambition. Like a machine stripped of emotion, he simply obeyed every order given to him. Whatever they asked him to do, he did. And just like that, the days slipped by one after another.

Even after deciding never to disturb Carole again, Kole still couldn’t stop himself from searching for news about Zhatwell during sleepless nights. Carole kept an extremely low profile now. Most of the time, he could only catch brief mentions of her through reports connected to the Knight Group.

For example, there had recently been news about her son being engaged to Alice, whose father ran Barnes Group.

Kole stared at the article, lost in thought. They were a perfect match. Two children growing up together as childhood sweethearts. A beautiful story from the very beginning. Completely different from what he and Carole once had.

That day, just like every other day, Kole unlocked his phone out of habit. Before he could even scroll through anything, a headline slammed into his sight like a bolt from the blue.

Kole froze. His breathing stalled for a second as his fingers tightened around the phone.

He tapped the article immediately, reading every line with grim focus. But the moment he saw the child’s age, only one year younger than Carole’s child, rage surged through him so fiercely that he nearly crushed the phone in his hand. That meant Mike had cheated not long after Carole gave birth.

So all those public displays of devotion, all those reports praising their perfect marriage and affectionate relationship, had been nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Kole could hardly imagine the pain Carole felt.

And the Davis family, where were they in all this? How could Mike act so shamelessly without anyone stopping him? Shouldn’t her parents have protected her?

Only after digging deeper did Kole learn the truth. Carole’s parents had died in a car accident shortly after her marriage. From that point onward, Mike had taken over the Davis Group. Then, just before news of the illegitimate child exploded online, the Davis Group officially announced bankruptcy restructuring before being fully absorbed into the Knight Group.
