Chapter 508:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
The murmuring of the crowd grew louder, shifting from simple curiosity to the excited buzz of a public execution. Employees who had cowered under Baker’s tyrannical reign for years were now looking at him with open contempt. They were looking at Allison with a newfound, fearful respect.
Baker knew he was finished if he couldn’t regain control. His authority was bleeding out all over the marble floor.
Just as the tension reached its breaking point, a calm, authoritative voice cut through the noise.
“That’s enough. This is a place of business, not a Roman amphitheater.”
The crowd parted like the Red Sea. Enrico Langley, the senior independent director, walked slowly into the center of the circle, leaning lightly on a silver-headed cane. His presence immediately commanded a gravitas that Baker, for all his bluster, could never hope to achieve.

Baker saw him and his face flooded with a desperate relief. “Enrico! Thank God. You see this? She’s gone insane!”
Enrico ignored him completely. He walked directly to Allison, his old, wise eyes studying her face. There was no judgment in them, only a deep, penetrating analysis.
“Allison,” he said, his voice low but firm. “Your accusations are serious. But the lobby of our corporate headquarters is not the proper venue. A spectacle like this only makes the entire company look weak to our competitors on the Street.”
Allison inclined her head in a gesture of respect. “Mr. Langley, I agree. However, all conventional channels of communication have been blocked. I was left with no other option.”
Her response was poised, respectful, but unyielding. Enrico gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod of approval.
He then turned his sharp gaze on Baker. “Baker,” he said, his tone hardening. “The issues Allison has raised, Cheyanne’s status, the initial risks of the TK project, they are valid concerns. You will prepare a full report for the board.”
“Yes, of course, Enrico. At the next quarterly meeting,” Baker stammered, eager to push the problem into the future.
“Before that,” Enrico said, cutting him off. He turned back to Allison. “You want an impartial investigation, correct?”
“Yes,” Allison said simply.
Enrico paused, stroking the silver head of his cane as if deep in thought. Then he delivered a solution that no one saw coming.
“Very well,” he announced, his voice carrying across the silent lobby. “To ensure impartiality, it is clear that Allison can no longer be involved in front-line business operations where she might have a conflict of interest.”
Baker’s eyes lit up. This was it. This was his escape.
“And,” Enrico continued, “to empower her to conduct the necessary review, I propose that she be temporarily appointed as the acting Vice President of the Compliance Department, effective immediately.”
A collective gasp went through the crowd.
The Compliance Department.
It was the company’s Siberia. A bureaucratic backwater filled with auditors and lawyers, responsible for reviewing past contracts and internal procedures. It had immense theoretical power to access any document, but it was completely removed from the real power centers of the company: sales, acquisitions, and strategy. It was a place where careers went to die. A gilded cage.
Allison stared at him, stunned. This felt like a betrayal. A punishment dressed up as a promotion.
