Chapter 290:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
“Did you teach him that?”
Nelson’s question hung in the air, his tone tinged with genuine curiosity rather than accusation.
Vicki’s brow furrowed as she shook her head, equally mystified. “I really didn’t.” Nolan, discovering some private amusement, attempted to wiggle his way off the bed independently.
“Brother… hug…”
His innocent request left both adults momentarily speechless.
Nelson watched as Nolan struggled with his descent, the child’s determination crumbling into frustrated tears.
“Nolan, let Mommy help you,” Vicki emerged from her stunned silence, moving toward her son with outstretched arms.
Yet Nolan’s cries persisted until Nelson, guided by an instinct he couldn’t explain, reached for the child. The moment Nolan settled in his arms, the tears ceased as if by magic. Remnants of his distress still glistened on his cheeks as a brilliant smile emerged, his head resting contentedly on Nelson’s shoulder.
Vicki observed this touching scene, her expression a tapestry of conflicting emotions. “It seems he prefers you and Nyla over his own mother. Nelson, I didn’t force your mother to her death. If you still harbor hatred for me, I have just one request.”
She sank to her knees while Nelson remained motionless, still cradling Nolan. “For the sake of Nolan preferring you over his mother, if I’m absent in the future, please watch over him.”
Her words carried the weight of maternal concern as she gazed up at her son. “I’m not asking you to raise him—just ensure he’s protected from harm.”

“Why can’t you fulfill that role yourself?” Nelson’s question emerged with measured calm.
Vicki’s body tensed as a pained smile crossed her face. “With Ryland’s current attitude toward me, I recognize my time here grows short. He’ll prevent me from seeing Nolan.”
Emotion overwhelmed her voice, and Nolan, sensing his mother’s distress, reached for her desperately.
Nelson transferred him back, and Vicki embraced her son with fierce tenderness.
“I see, but I’ll only do what’s within my power.”
That promise of effort, Vicki reflected, exceeded her expectations.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Nyla awakened and immediately attempted to remove her IV, desperate to locate Callie. Ethan’s firm grip stopped her short.
“Release me!” Nyla demanded, her pallid lips trembling with barely contained anguish.
Ethan’s concerned frown deepened as he maintained his hold, trying to reason with her. “Your body hasn’t recovered; can’t you understand that?”
Nyla’s ice-cold stare met his. “I know you’ve discovered the results, so why do you remain idle? Perhaps you’re indifferent to this child, but I’m not!”
