Chapter 1947:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Two hours later, the doors of the emergency room finally opened.
Jewell stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask. His face was heavy with concern.
“William is stable for now, but… there’s something you need to know.”
When he met Stella’s tear-filled eyes, he knew his words would only deepen her pain. But keeping it from her would be even more unfair.
Stella felt her heart drop to her stomach. “It’s okay, you can tell me. How is he really?”
In her mind, she had already braced herself for the worst. No matter what the outcome would be, she had decided she would stay with William until the very end, even if it meant walking with him through his final days.
Jewell looked at her with sympathy.
“The toxins in his body have started to spread. His organs are failing quickly. If we can’t find an antidote soon, he might…”
Stella’s breath hitched. “Might what?”

Jewell’s jaw tightened. Then he answered, “We previously estimated he could last up to six months, with three as the minimum. It’s only been a month and a half, but based on how fast the toxins are spreading now, he may only have… about two weeks left.”
He had wanted to soften the words. But no matter how he phrased it, the outcome was the same. There was no way he could make her feel better. After speaking, he lowered his gaze, unable to look at her right away.
Two weeks.
The words hit Stella like a ton of bricks. In that instant, all the strength seemed to leave her body, and she could barely keep herself standing.
Jewell reacted quickly. He caught her before she could fall and led her to a chair. “Try to stay calm. If you break down too, William might not even be able to last those two weeks.”
Tears slipped down Stella’s cheeks, one drop after another falling onto the floor. In the stillness of the hospital corridor, each faint sound felt unbearably sharp.
Jewell looked clearly worried. He reached out and handed her a tissue. “Here, wipe your face first.”
Stella hurriedly wiped her tears and lifted her head. “Can I see him?”
“You can, but he’s still unconscious.”
Stella went inside the room and saw William lying still on the bed. He looked paler than she had ever seen him. The steady beeping of the heart monitor was the only sign that he was still alive. Without it, she would think that he was already gone.
She stepped closer and gently took his hand. It was cold, so cold it held almost no warmth. It was nothing like the firm and comforting hand she remembered.
She crouched beside the bed, enclosed his hand in both of hers, and softly breathed warmth into it. “William, your hands are freezing. Please wake up and look at me. I am terrified.”
There was no reaction.
Stella bent over the bedside, her tears pouring into the blanket.
