Chapter 1134:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
“Mr. Garcia, you’re overthinking this—it’s merely casual conversation,” the police team leader said with a light chuckle, though he had already committed Daxton’s details to memory.
He deliberately slowed his pace, allowing distance to form between himself and the others, then discreetly transmitted the information Daxton had provided to the officers waiting in their patrol car. By the time the message was sent, they had reached the entrance to the dining room.
Carrie had just finished her meal and stood up to greet the officers when a familiar figure among the uniforms caught her eye. Her brow furrowed in confusion. “Daxton? Why didn’t you tell me about something this serious? I only found out about what happened when my team saw it on the evening news.”
Daxton hurried toward her, grasping her hands tightly as his eyes swept over her with unmistakable anxiety. “I’m so sorry. I’ve completely failed you as a boyfriend. If I hadn’t been stuck in business meetings, if I had stayed by your side, none of this nightmare would have happened.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he released her hands and struck himself hard across the face.
A vivid red handprint immediately appeared on his cheek, the sharp sound echoing through the room and leaving no doubt about the force of the blow.
From the back of the group, the team leader observed the scene with narrowed eyes. Years of experience had taught him how to identify manipulation in all its disguises. While others might see Daxton’s behavior as heartfelt remorse or devotion, he recognized the warning signs of dangerous obsession. People like this often hid their volatility behind refined manners, but beneath that composed exterior lay the greatest potential for violence.
As Daxton lifted his hand to strike himself again, Carrie rushed forward and grabbed his wrist. “Stop this,” she said firmly.
Seeing the situation escalate, Reece stepped between them and pulled Daxton into a restraining embrace. “Don’t traumatize Carrie any further. We’re all safe now, and no one could have predicted this attack. By your logic, since every member of the Morrison family was in Isonridge, does that mean we’re all failures?”
Daxton’s hand fell to his side, his posture collapsing as defeat washed over him. His gaze dropped, cool shadows forming beneath his dark lashes and accentuating the hollows of his face.

Once his volatile energy had fully subsided, the officer turned his attention to Carrie. “Ms. Campbell, would this be an appropriate time to record your statement?”
Carrie nodded without hesitation. “Let’s use the side hall. The dining room is still somewhat chaotic.”
The team leader motioned for the other officers to clear the area, then inclined his head politely. “Please lead the way, Ms. Campbell.”
Daxton immediately stepped forward and laced his fingers through Carrie’s. “I’m coming with you.”
Carrie glanced at the surrounding officers and chose not to embarrass him publicly, given the official nature of their relationship. Reece joined them as well.
As Carrie gave her statement, Daxton remained at her side, his hold on her hand firm and possessive. His eyes burned with intensity as he absorbed every detail of her experience, though he restrained himself from further dramatic displays. He understood that emotional outbursts lost their effectiveness when overused—powerful when applied with precision, but transparent when repeated excessively. Lise and Aliza had squandered such tactics through constant repetition. Daxton refused to weaken his impact with similar miscalculations.
When the statement concluded, the officer offered a few professional courtesies before adding, “We’re still conducting an active search for Lise’s current location…”
The shrill ring of his phone cut him off mid-sentence. As he answered, his expression steadily darkened with concern, and the change in his demeanor sent a ripple of tension through everyone present.
The moment he ended the call, Daxton’s patience snapped. “What’s the situation?”
The officer’s gaze swept over their faces, heavy with solemnity. “Lise may still be alive.”
