Chapter 1221: (END)
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
At that point, I’ll admit it: I don’t have the thickest skin. If you want to slander me or make things up, I’m not afraid of that. But if you hit a nerve? I’ll absolutely lose it.
That’s the human condition, isn’t it? Trying to cover up your own ugliness and embarrassment with blustering rage.
Writing for the market just for money isn’t shameful. But what I’m actually ashamed of is this: I kept telling everyone I didn’t care about the criticism, yet I couldn’t handle a single word of it.
Fortunately, I came to my senses. I stopped writing, then restructured the direction and themes of the book. I should write what I actually want to write.
It’s still not a good book. I wouldn’t call it a good piece of work. I only gave it an ending.
Maybe a lot of you will feel that lingering ache of dissatisfaction. I feel it too. But once a character truly comes to life, the consequences ripple outward in a chain reaction I can’t control.
Not long ago, I received two letters about another book of mine. They were actual letters, the kind that begin with “Dear Big Fish, I hope this letter finds you well.”
I never imagined my “work” could inspire people, could help someone see through the fog and find their way. That genuinely moved me to tears.
And then there’s this book, where you all absolutely savaged me. You asked why she was so pathetic, why she was so cruel, why he never did anything. You asked if I just favored the male characters, if I got off on torturing the heroine, if there was something seriously wrong with me.
I don’t. And no. I was just writing about human nature.
Even if you told me your own life was miserable enough and my book just made everything worse. Even if you said I’d insulted your eyes. Then walk away. Stop reading. Why put yourself through that?

Every vivid character is a different door into human desire. The characters I wrote are my worldview. Good and evil are just my positive and negative poles; there are no absolutes, only human nature.
People can endure hardship together fairly easily, especially lovers. But sharing good times is much harder, especially for couples who survived the hard times together. Love gets used up during the suffering. When the good days finally arrive, there’s nothing left but obsession with material things, the thrill of novelty, and indulgent desire. Because when people suddenly lack nothing, they start lacking a moral compass.
If all the bitterness in your own lives was just made worse by the misery in my book, I’m sorry. Since you’ve read this far, I suppose you count as my patrons, so I should also say thank you. But I’m not going to change a thing. (That part’s not important.)
Given all that unresolved dissatisfaction, and the source of your anger, I’d like to share a personal creed with you.
Charlie Munger once said something similar: when someone surprises you, and not in a good way, the natural response is not to dwell on the betrayal but to adjust and accept reality at once, refusing to wallow in feelings of having been wronged. At the first trace of self-pity, stop it and find a way past it. Playing the victim is a self-destructive way of thinking. You are not a victim. You are a survivor.
So, whatever terrible things someone else does, that’s their problem. How you pull yourself out of the emotional wreckage is yours. If you decide you’re not a victim, then you can lead yourself out of it.
Staying trapped in thoughts like “Why is my life so miserable? Why did he hurt me like that? I’ll never trust anyone again” is violence against yourself.
We didn’t live through war-torn chaos. We never had to see fields strewn with corpses. To grow old peacefully and in good health, that alone is an incredible stroke of luck.
I hope you all escape nature’s cruelties, travel safely wherever you go, and suffer only minor ailments that never linger. If all of these things come true, then please live the rest of your days to the fullest.
Say what needs to be said while you still can. Visit the places you long to see. You fought hard for a ticket to this world, so enjoy the show.
The road ahead is long. Until we meet again.
