Chapter 599:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Clarence’s tone turned icy. “Father, this is not the time for sentimentality. Garrett is lying in a hospital bed, and I have a mountain of corporate issues to deal with. I don’t have time to pay for someone else’s mistakes. Not to mention, your son’s divorce is a city-wide spectacle that’s already affecting the group’s stock price.” The tension over his own messy divorce from Genevieve was another sore point between them.
Seated behind the desk, Alistair Thornton bore the same imposing air he had always had.
Alistair did not look up. “Have you brought Genevieve back?”
“No.” Clarence answered truthfully.
Alistair paused mid-signature, his aged eyes swirling with unreadable emotion. “You may file for a divorce if you do not love her, but you must speak plainly with the Powells. Have you considered how difficult her position at home will be if the marriage ends without proper closure?”
“I do not recall raising you to act so irresponsibly.”

“She never mentioned it.” Clarence had no idea she was struggling at home. Though they were husband and wife, beyond knowing her name and sending a yearly gift picked out by his assistant, he knew almost nothing about her life. “I have been tied up with Garrett’s affairs these days and have not had time to see her.”
Once divorced, they would cut all contact. Clarence wanted a clean break, no lingering ties.
As a father, Alistair understood his son. He and Garrett were polar opposites — one reserved and awkward, the other unrestrained and self-assured.
“I’ve heard that ever since Garrett joined Thornton Global, you have gradually handed work over to him. Do you plan to leave once he grows familiar with the business? Where do you intend to go? To find Eliza Vance?”
Alistair pressed on with his questions. “How many times must I tell you? Anyone but Eliza Vance.” That woman was far more troublesome than Amelia. Eliza Vance was trouble through and through.
“Father, I have not thought that far ahead.” Clarence offered no further explanation.
Back at the safe house, Amelia was restless with worry for Garrett.
Nina’s phone suddenly rang. Seeing the caller ID, her face went white. She hurried out to the balcony to answer it.
Through the glass door, Amelia could see her, agitated, arguing and pleading into the phone.
It only deepened Amelia’s suspicion. Nina was hiding something.
When Nina came back inside, her eyes were red, but she insisted it was just a family matter.
Amelia didn’t press further, but a crack in her trust had appeared.
Clarence, true to his word, called Amelia back after the confrontation with his father. Seeing her worried face on the screen, he knew he had to reassure her.
“Amelia, I know what you’re thinking,” his voice came through the speaker, calm and authoritative. “But trust me, Garrett is stronger than you imagine, and the Thornton security apparatus is more formidable than you can conceive.”
He began to explain their strategy. “Brice Langley is an extremely arrogant man, a classic avenger. He doesn’t just want Garrett’s life; he wants to savor the cat-and-mouse game. He wants to destroy Garrett mentally.”
