Chapter 871:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
The voice that blasted through the speaker was not the controlled predator she remembered. This was Kane Barrett unhinged — a man driven to the edge by fear, convinced his son had been taken from him.
“It’s me,” Haleigh said, her own voice a cold, quiet whisper.
Silence. Absolute and profound — more terrifying than the rage. For five full seconds, the air in the vehicle felt frozen solid.
“Mary.” The name came out like a shard of ice, spoken with a calm and chilling precision that promised a slow reckoning. “Why do you have my son’s phone?”
“He was at the Hampton farm. He was caught in the storm and has a severe fever,” she said, keeping her voice flat and mechanical. “I am taking him to a hospital in Manhattan.”
She could almost hear the sound of his restraint breaking over the line.

“You took him to the farm? You let him get sick?!” His voice dropped back into that quiet, murderous register. “I warned you to stay away from my family. You worthless, money-grubbing bitch.”
The insult drove into her chest like a poisoned blade, but she clenched her jaw and held. “He needs a doctor, Kane. Not your tantrum.”
“Turn on your location,” Kane said, the words stripped of all emotion, replaced by the cold finality of an order. “My helicopter is already in the air.” A pause. Then the final strike. “From this moment on, do not touch him. Do not speak to him. If you go near him again, I will make sure you disappear from this world so completely that no one will even remember your name.”
The line went dead.
Haleigh’s fingers were bone-white around the phone. She looked down at her son — so small, so fragile — and pressed her eyes shut against the wave of pain that followed.
Ten minutes later, as the Knight XV crossed into Manhattan, it happened. Three black armored SUVs materialized from the storm like wraiths — one cutting across their path, two flanking from either side — boxing them in with brutal, tactical precision and forcing the vehicle to a screeching halt on the highway shoulder.
The fluorescent lights of the emergency room hummed, casting a sterile, unforgiving glow on Haleigh’s rain-soaked clothes. She shivered, though not from the cold seeping into her bones. It was fear — a frantic, buzzing terror that had taken root the moment Liam’s fever spiked, and had driven her through the storm to the one place she knew he could be saved, and the one man she had spent six years running from.
She was staring at the door to Liam’s room when the air beside her shifted. The scent reached her first — sandalwood and clean linen, so deeply embedded in her memory it felt like a phantom limb.
Her head turned slowly.
Kane.
