Chapter 462:

Khloe, in contrast, appeared composed as she smoothly picked a slip of paper and glanced at it briefly before holding it up.
Sloane couldn’t figure out if Khloe’s task was challenging or not, and she muttered under her breath, convinced Khloe was once again showing off. Unknown to many, Conroy had meddled with the drawing box to ensure Khloe would face a surgery that seemed insurmountable.
Meanwhile, the others began drawing their slips.
The only man, visibly trembling with nerves, collapsed as soon as he read his slip. A staff member hurried to support him and escort him off stage. The other woman pressed her lips together, trying to maintain her composure, but the sweat glistening on her forehead gave her away. When she read her task, tears brimmed in her eyes, and she turned to Richard, her voice shaking with frustration.
“Mr. Smith, you’ve assigned me a valve surgery to be completed in three hours! That’s impossible! Are you trying to make this intentionally hard for me?”
Richard’s brow furrowed as he replied, “Let’s all take a moment to settle down. This challenge is designed to test not just your technical skills but also your mental strength. For those questioning my fairness, Selena will also join you in this evaluation.”
At his words, the woman took a shaky breath to steady herself, though her voice quivered as she replied, “I apologize for my outburst, but this surgery is beyond my ability. I have to step down.”
Richard gave her a firm but kind look and said, “Are you certain about withdrawing? This is a unique chance to demonstrate your potential and gain valuable experience. Sometimes, taking on a challenge leads to surprising growth.”
Her eyes reflected inner conflict, but after a moment, she shook her head and said, “Mr. Smith, I understand how important this opportunity is, but I’m aware of my own limitations. Attempting this might lead to mistakes I can’t afford to make.”
With her decision made, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders. Those watching recognized that failing here wasn’t just humiliating—it could mean life-or-death consequences in the real world.

Even with signed waivers, she knew any mistakes would weigh on her conscience and open her up to harsh judgment from others.
Richard gave a brief nod. “Very well, if that’s your decision, you’re excused from this evaluation.”
With only Khloe, Sloane, and Selena left on stage, Selena sent Khloe a sharp, defiant glance before heading into the operating room. She was resolute in proving herself, reclaiming her pride, and outshining Khloe completely. Meanwhile, Sloane was deep in thought. Part of her hoped that the tough topic Conroy had chosen would put Khloe in an awkward spot, while another part was focused on figuring out how to surpass Selena during the surgery. Despite everything, she wasn’t concerned about Khloe stealing the spotlight.
She was certain that Conroy’s topic for her was exceptionally difficult. Khloe stepped into the operating room, where the nurses and anesthetists were already prepared for her arrival.
Once all three had entered, the large screen lit up, revealing the conditions of their respective patients. Khloe’s patient was diagnosed with Wechsler Syndrome.
Known as one of the gravest conditions in cardiac surgery, Wechsler Syndrome had left the patient in critical condition. Both heart and lung functions were deteriorating rapidly, with the heart teetering on the edge of failure. Without immediate surgery, the patient wouldn’t survive for another attempt.
In contrast, the procedures assigned to Sloane and Selena were relatively straightforward. Selena was tasked with performing a heart valve replacement, while Sloane’s patient presented with an I-shaped aortic abnormality.
The audience broke into a flurry of murmurs.
