Chapter 474:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Her eyes gleamed with excitement and a touch of curiosity, but there was no sign of empathy for the child’s pain in her gaze.
The others didn’t fault her for her reaction. In fact, they admired her boldness, knowing her exceptional skills could potentially turn the tide in this tough case.
At last, the child, tired of being examined like a mere object, spoke up sharply. “Step back. I don’t like the way you’re staring at me.”
Artist was momentarily stunned before shooting the child a scornful look. “Is that how you speak to someone trying to help you? Don’t you want to live?”
The child clenched…
His fists clenched, his expression turning from disdain to a quiet sadness. Of course, he wanted to live.
Seeing the change in the boy, Khloe stepped protectively in front of him, her tone frosty. “Artist, it’s far from certain who will save him. You’re getting ahead of yourself.”
Khloe turned to the boy, her tone softening as she asked, “What’s your name?”
The boy met her gaze, curiosity flickering in his eyes. “I’m Tom Stevenson. Are you going to treat me as well?”
“Yes. Are you scared?”
From the moment Khloe laid eyes on Tom, there was something about him that felt oddly familiar. He reminded her of the first person who had shown her kindness when she was locked away in prison.
If it hadn’t been for the little girl who secretly passed her a piece of potato while Khloe was beaten and starving, Khloe might not have made it through. Sadly, that same kind-hearted girl, born and raised in the prison walls, never had the chance to leave. She died there, slowly and painfully, on a grimy, cramped prison bed.
Despite the knowledge Khloe had accumulated over the years, her advanced skills, and access to state-of-the-art medical equipment, she could do nothing to save that little girl.

The pain of that failure would forever haunt Khloe, a wound that time would never heal.
“Yes, I am…” After a long pause, Tom finally opened up. “I’m most scared of never seeing my mom again.”
Khloe’s heart caught in her chest when she heard his words. With a gentle gesture, she extended her finger to him. “Let’s make a promise. I will cure you.”
At that moment, Artist interjected, interrupting the tender moment.
With a mocking glance at Khloe, she sneered. “Why not stop pretending to comfort the child and just start the surgery? Once he’s on the table, no amount of kind words will make a difference. You seem to love playing the role of the good person. If you hadn’t challenged me to a competition, I’d swear you were an actress. Kid, let me teach you a lesson today. Those who talk too much won’t be of any use when it really matters.”
Tom felt a shiver run through him. He pulled back the finger he had almost extended to meet Khloe’s.
Artist’s comment sparked laughter from the crowd, and a few young doctors, who were aware of Khloe’s past as a celebrity, quietly whispered to each other.
“Artist really knows what she’s talking about. Isn’t Khloe just an actress, though?”
“Khloe seems to love being in the spotlight. If she’s serious about the surgery, she should just get on with it. Asking the patient’s name is pointless; it’s all just for attention.”
“Exactly! If she hadn’t said a few sensible things earlier, I’d be asking her to leave right now so that we could talk with Richard and Artist. Watching these professionals is a real learning experience.”
Khloe, who had been keeping her composure until then, suddenly felt a rush of anger as she overheard the whispers around her. It was bad enough that Artist was targeting her, but threatening the patient crossed a line she couldn’t ignore.
