Chapter 1797: (END)

Then Cedric laughed — low, almost warm. “But I changed my mind. Death would be too easy. I’d rather let you live long enough to watch me keep winning. You can go on spying from the shadows, festering with jealousy, drowning in the life you’ve built for yourself.” He tilted his head slightly. “Honestly, if you just dropped dead now, where’s the satisfaction in that?”
He smiled faintly. The moonlight fell across him in a way that was almost surreal.
Every bit of it made Alexander’s blood boil.
Cedric turned to leave, then paused. “One more thing. My wife is expecting again. A daughter this time.”
Alexander’s disfigured face twisted further.
“Our family will know nothing but joy,” Cedric said. “And after us, there will be children and grandchildren to carry it forward. You’ll spend the rest of your life watching from the outside, unable to touch any of it. That’s exactly why I’m sparing you. So you’ll live long enough to see all the happiness you were never capable of building.”
He got into the car and drove away, still smiling.
Alexander stood in the dark, his frail body trembling. He screamed after the disappearing headlights. “Daniela should have been mine! She belongs with me!” He dropped to his knees in the mud, repeating it like a prayer no one would ever answer. “She was meant to be mine.
That same night, a violent storm swept through Olisvine.
Rain surged through the streets in sheets. The sewers overflowed. The old shack, already barely standing, offered no resistance — it was swept away in the flood before morning.
Days passed.

Someone eventually found a body in the ruins. An old man, cold and rigid, unrecognized by anyone who came. They handled the remains without ceremony and without a name.
That same afternoon, Daniela’s car rolled past a quiet street. She noticed a few people loading a body bag into a van.
Carol glanced over. “What are you looking at?”
“The sunset,” Daniela said calmly. “It’s really something here.”
Her pregnancy was no secret. This time, it was a girl.
The child hadn’t yet arrived, and already people were positioning themselves for an introduction. Everyone wanted to be close to Daniela. Everyone hoped to follow the Loglil princess’s example and secure some kind of bond with this family before the opportunity passed.
Cedric put an end to it quietly but without any room for misunderstanding.
“My daughter was born to be loved and to live with dignity,” he told those who came. “When the time comes for her to choose a partner, it will be her choice — not a title, not an arrangement. You’ll have to earn her trust on your own.” The visitors left with his words still ringing in their ears.
Meanwhile, the Loglil princess had quietly begun hoping her next child would be a son.
Time passed, and Daniela gave birth to a daughter.
They named her Chloe Harper.
From the very beginning, Chloe was bright, quick-witted, and considerably more trouble than her brothers had ever managed to be. One afternoon, she knocked over a vase — one of Daniela’s favorites — and watched it shatter on the floor.
Hamilton appeared in the doorway and gasped. “Chloe! That’s your mother’s favorite vase. Your father is going to be furious with you!”
Chloe burst into laughter. It was nearly identical to the way Daniela had laughed as a little girl.
Cedric came in, arranged his face into his sternest expression — and held it for approximately three seconds.
Then he sighed. “How am I supposed to punish a face like that?” He looked at her for a long moment. “Chloe. Be a good girl, all right?”
Still laughing, Chloe launched herself into his arms and pressed a kiss against his cheek.
Every last trace of sternness disappeared.
He tapped her nose gently. “You are absolute trouble,” he murmured.
The family stood nearby, watching. And then the laughter came — full and unrestrained, rolling out through the open windows and drifting into the world beyond, where it had every reason to go.
