Chapter 453:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
After all these years, here was a fragment of her mother’s past, the very clue she’d been longing to find. She was finally one step closer to the truth, closer to uncovering what had happened all those years ago.
Allison’s remark left Roderick slightly stunned. He hadn’t expected to stumble upon the truth by pure chance.
“I’ve done some digging. This piece traces back to Vrining,” he began, giving her a brief rundown of what he knew.
“During the black-market exchange, the seller was peculiar. He looked foreign and kept his distance, as if he wanted to disappear.”
Allison’s brows knitted together at his words.
Vrining was an enormous country, so she knew that finding useful information based on just an earring was like trying to fish a needle out of the ocean.
She eyed the earring in her hand, noticing a dark speck— a faint, dried smear of old blood.
“Do you know any specific part of Vrining it might have come from?” she asked, doing her best to hold back the wave of emotions swirling inside her.
Allison didn’t even know whether her mother was still alive, and all she could do now was steady herself and take each step forward carefully.
“Fleeingland!” Roderick replied without missing a beat. “I’ve got a few contacts in the black market, and they say Fleeingland is infamous, a stretch of no-man’s land in Vrining’s western region where almost no one dares to go.”
His tone darkened, his eyes locking with hers as he leaned forward slightly.

“Lately, human trafficking has spiked there. They even say disturbing experiments are going on, making the place a nightmare in Vrining.”
Upon hearing this, Allison was slightly shocked. Her hand slipped, and her teacup toppled over with a clatter, spilling tea across the table.
For the last three years, she had steadily put the past behind her, ignoring the troubles in Vrining, thinking that part of her life was closed. But now she realized just how treacherous certain parts of the world still were. She quickly started wiping up the spill.
“Sorry about that.”
“Don’t worry, Allison. Just don’t burn yourself.” Roderick grabbed some napkins to help her.
“I’ll clean it up.”
A shiver ran through her as she clutched her fingers, trying to steady her hand.
“Isn’t there military oversight in that area?”
“There is, but it doesn’t reach far enough,” Roderick answered with a grave shake of his head.
He couldn’t believe what fate awaited those who had the misfortune of being sold to the island if there really were human laboratories there.
