Chapter 480:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
When she looked up, she realized that Kellan had taken the seat beside her, the narrow space between their chairs bridging a gap that felt symbolic of their complicated relationship—neither too close nor too distant.
Carole, with a knowing smile, broke the silence. “Ms. Clarke, I hope you don’t mind us sitting here?”
“Not at all,” Allison replied, leaning forward with her chin propped on her hand, her eyes glinting with amusement. She sensed the faint hint of rivalry in Carole’s gaze. “The café isn’t mine, Miss Perry. Feel free.”
Carole had anticipated a tinge of annoyance from Allison. Rumors had circulated about Allison’s unusual relationship with Kellan, but Allison’s calmness threw her off slightly.
Carole’s smile faltered, her brows knitting briefly. She wondered if she had gotten the wrong information, but her polite smile quickly returned.
“Of course, what a nice surprise running into you like this. Ms. Clarke, you probably don’t know, but Kellan’s a real workaholic. Always busy, barely ever making time for coffee.”
Carole slid into the seat between Kellan and Allison with an ease that belied her wealthy background. Her manners were far more approachable than one would expect from a socialite.
She continued her friendly chatter, though her tone held a hint of pride. “Kellan’s always been the model child—disciplined, ambitious, and so talented. My parents were always praising him and often invited him over for family meals.”
Soft music filled the café as Carole reminisced, memories pouring out like an open floodgate. She pretended to add a casual comment. “Oh, Kellan, remember how you used to love the braised chicken my mom cooked?”

“Actually, it was something Grandma enjoyed,” Kellan responded, his tone laced with barely perceptible sarcasm. “On holidays, she’d pay your family extra for it to repay a favor,” he added.
His grandmother had been generous, but the Perry family’s greed had always left a sour note. They had exploited her generosity, and after learning about his physical disability, they had swiftly canceled the engagement between their families.
Carole’s face froze momentarily, caught off guard by Kellan’s words. She quickly recovered, pretending not to grasp his meaning.
“So, you liked it, right?” she ventured, blinking innocently.
“I wouldn’t know,” Kellan replied flatly, his voice completely devoid of emotion. “It was all fed to Lucky.” Everyone knew his grandmother had once owned a dog named Lucky.
Carole fell silent, words failing her for once.
Kellan’s tone seemed laced with humor, yet the icy, razor-sharp aura surrounding him left no room for warmth. He felt as distant as a mountain peak shrouded in mist — powerful, and utterly unapproachable.
But Carole wasn’t one to back down easily. Known for her dogged persistence, she wasn’t deterred.
