Chapter 718:

“Don’t worry. I’m not reckless.”
After receiving her confirmation, Gordon headed back to the secret base. Once there, he found Amya in the basement. “Has Kellan come out of the lab yet?”
“Not yet,” she replied, but hesitated before continuing. “Earlier, Mr. Lloyd asked me if something had happened to Ms. Clarke. I didn’t say anything, but… something feels off.”
Gordon turned his attention to the surveillance screen showing the lab. Kellan was walking toward the office, toolbox in hand, his stride purposeful.
A female researcher brightened when she saw him. “Oh, you’re finally here. The air conditioning’s broken again.”
Kellan didn’t seem surprised. “I’ll take care of it. Just need to replace a part.”
As he walked by, the researcher’s eyes followed him, clearly admiring his build.
“He’s pretty capable,” she murmured under her breath.
Another researcher clicked his tongue. “Don’t get your hopes up. I heard he has a girlfriend.”
The female researcher’s expression fell, but she wasn’t ready to give up so easily. She turned to Kellan once more. “Hey, do you really have a girlfriend?”

“I do,” Kellan answered with complete seriousness. “Her name’s Alice. She works here, just on the first basement level.”
The mention of Alice immediately made everyone in the room exchange uneasy glances.
Kellan sensed the tension and frowned. “What’s going on?”
Finally, one of the male researchers, unable to contain himself any longer, sighed dramatically and clicked his tongue. “If Alice is your girlfriend, maybe you should reconsider. You might want to find someone else.”
Kellan’s jaw tightened.
The words hit him harder than he expected. Something wasn’t right, and he knew it. If Allison were all right, Amya wouldn’t have been so quiet about it.
Kellan’s gaze darkened as he turned back to the researchers. “Please tell me everything you know.”
The gossiping researcher hesitated, but his curiosity ultimately got the better of him. He sighed deeply and finally spoke. “You don’t know, do you? Your girlfriend, Alice… well, Mr. Shaw has taken an interest in her.”
Kellan’s gaze was as cold as a winter storm. “What do you mean by that?” he asked, his voice clipped, betraying no emotion. The other researchers in the room watched, drawn in by a mix of sympathy and undeniable curiosity.
They couldn’t tear their eyes away, each of them wondering if he’d finally crack, if they’d catch a glimpse of raw emotion, whether it be sorrow or rage. Everyone waited, eager to see if Kellan would reveal any vulnerability.
