At first, the voice sounded distant and distorted. Then it grew clearer and closer.

“Colton, what’s wrong?”

Slowly, he opened his eyes and found his head resting in Kristine’s lap. He looked up at her, then took in the familiar surroundings. This was the villa where they lived together.

“Are you okay?” Kristine asked, suspicion mingling with concern on her face.

“I… how did I get here?” Colton looked completely lost.

“You got completely drunk last night. Devin brought you home. Now tell me what’s going on.”

He frowned. “Drunk? But… Elyse called me.”

Kristine stiffened at once. “Elyse? Who’s that? Colton, are you seeing someone else?”

Her reaction felt real. Too real. The hurt in her voice was unmistakable.

This was reality.

Without warning, Colton sat up and pulled her tightly into his arms. The warmth of her body flooded through him. To be sure, he pinched himself hard, and pain shot through his arm.

Real. Everything was real.

Kristine had never left. She was still here with him. There had been no separation. No marriage to Asher.

Joy erupted inside him with overwhelming force. He held her even closer, as if letting go might make her disappear.

“What’s gotten into you?” Kristine asked, utterly bewildered, though she made no attempt to pull away.

“Nothing. I just had a terrible dream. In it, you left me forever.”

“That’s ridiculous. Are you feeling sick?”

Maybe he was. With an illness that had no cure, one that made life impossible whenever she wasn’t there.

Whether this was a dream or reality no longer mattered. All he wanted was for this moment to stay exactly as it was. Forever.

The thought made him tighten his embrace once more. “Kristine, I love you.”
