Chapter 13: (END)
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
“Together,” he said, and that single word did more work than it had any right to.
He had his hand at my jaw, tilting my face toward his. Our foreheads together. His breath unsteady. Mine worse.
“One.”
I gripped his shoulders.
“Two.”
My nails found his back and I stopped apologizing for it.
𝘈𝗰𝘁𝗂𝘷e 𝗰𝗈𝗺𝗆𝘶𝗇і𝘁𝘺 𝗈𝗇 𝘨𝗮𝗹n𝗼𝗏𝗲𝗅ѕ.𝖼o𝗺
“Three.”
The world did not explode. It did something quieter and more thorough — a long wave that moved through me and left me with my face in his neck and no particular desire to be anywhere else.
He held still. His hand moved up my spine, slowly, like he was making sure of something.
Neither of us spoke.
“That was incredible,” he said finally. Breathless. Certain, the way he said most things.
I turned my head enough to look at him. His hair was a disaster. There was a small red mark on his shoulder where my fingers had been. He looked completely unbothered by both.
I had been lying against him, not moving, not wanting to, for longer than I had planned. He had not moved either. He had noticed me noticing this.
I sat up.
“Do you need a break?” He was watching me with that focused attention — the kind that saw more than I offered. A smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. “Or should we go straight to round two?”
I looked at him.
I looked at the door.
Downstairs the party continued, indifferent: bass through the floor, someone laughing, the ordinary noise of a night that had no idea what had happened up here.
I had come to this party to ruin Piper’s evening. That had been the plan. A sensible, petty, completely sufficient reason to be here.
I looked back at Beckham.
“Round two,” I said.
