Chapter 511

“You really want to do this?”
Maddy hesitated, contemplating whether she owed him a conversation. She and Nerion were still not on good terms. The cause of his detachment was still a mystery to her.
“Yes. I can’t… stay here. Not after everything.”
Nerion nodded. “But you do realize Jaris had to kill him? Caden was never going to stop. He’s always been a problem; would’ve never stopped being one.”
“I know! But it doesn’t change the fact that this family is messed up! My little niece who I love so much turned out to be a Siphon who killed my mother. My brothers hated each other so much that one eventually killed the other.” Her voice cracked. “I watched it happen. I begged him not to, but he didn’t listen. He killed him.”
Sniffling, she wiped her face. “While I don’t exactly blame Jaris for what he did, I can’t get over the fact that we’re fucked in the head. From my mother to me. The Dreadmoors have always been fucked.”
She rolled her luggage to the door, getting past Nerion.
“I’m sorry, Maddy.”
She paused.
“I don’t know why I chose now of all times to reveal this to you.”
Maddy knew what he was on about. She’d been waiting eagerly for it. She turned around to face him.
There was hesitation in his eyes. “You were a good friend. Maybe even more. Until eight years ago. The day you lost your mind and went on a killing rampage, you killed someone dear to me. My sister.”
The luggage left Maddy’s grip. Her jaw nearly hit the floor from how widely her mouth opened.

“Jenna doesn’t stay here. That day, she flew into the country to visit me for the first time in ten years. Both of us… we were the last of our late mother. She was new in the Pack, you didn’t know her. But she was one of those you killed.” His cold eyes cracked with an emotion: pain.
“You never got to know because you were sent to the mental facility right away. You left without knowing the damage you’d done to me.”
“No…”
“I hated you, Maddy. I hated you for it. This was why I stayed away. But to you, you only saw a friend who grew cold for no reason.”
“No…”
She broke into sobs, her hand going over her mouth. He watched her.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t know… I didn’t know…”
Nerion closed his eyes for three seconds. When they opened again, they were as cold as they used to be.
“I guess you’re right, Maddy. The Dreadmoor family is truly fucked. Nevertheless, I miss what we used to be… and what we would have become.”
He turned around and left, leaving behind a sting that was forever going to haunt her.

“She’s better than she was a month ago. So, with more care, she’ll get better,” Doctor Meredith finished her analysis of Greta.
Looking through the window, I watched Greta’s sleeping form on the bed. She looked so peaceful in her sleep. I wished she were just the same whenever she was awake.
“Thank you, Meredith. Don’t forget to keep me posted. All the time.”
