I rolled my eyes and gave up, returning my head to his chest. Gods, it felt so peaceful here. For the first time in my life, I felt complete.

Seconds turned into minutes. I stayed with my eyes closed while listening to the rhythm of Jaris’ heart. He had his arms around me, keeping me close and stroking my hair.

I stiffened when his fingers traced the scar along my hairline, the one left by Caden’s feral beast. It was the one reminder of the things I survived.

“Who do you think scarred you as a child?”

I shrugged. “We never got to know. My father had a lot of enemies then. I won’t be surprised if I were merely a tool for revenge.”

“Hmm.” He breathed on my hair, his fingers threading through.

“Jaris, are you sure you don’t want me to…” I cleared my throat and he laughed.

“When will you ever be bold enough to pronounce my cock, Lyric? You have it all the time.”

“Hey!” I hit him on the chest. Geez! The guy was brazen.

He pulled me back to his chest.

“I’m sure, Lyric. There’s no point treating me. As long as I get full satisfaction from you, I think I’m fine. I don’t want it from anyone else.”

I bit my lips to suppress the smile running up my cheeks. But there was nothing I could do to stop the sweet warmth that unfurled in my chest.

There was a good chance Jaris and I might never stop facing challenges. Our relationship might not be a ‘happily ever after’, but there was definitely going to be a ‘forever.’

I kept my eyes closed, fascinated by his heartbeat. “We’ll make it work, Jaris. The world could fight us for all we cared. In the end, we’re always going to win.”

I pulled back slightly just to look into his eyes. He still had his arms around my waist.

“Our love story may never be perfect, but even the devil would wish he could trade his dominion for a single day of what we have.”

He smiled down at me. That smile that always reminded me of how deeply I was gone for this man.

Jaris Dreadmoor and I were not fated mates, but we loved each other in a way that defied logic. In a way that even the mate bond would’ve never been able to create.

His hand tangled in my hair just before he crashed his lips on mine. I kissed him back, knowing deep in my heart he was the man I’d die with.
