Chapter 239:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Corinne POV
The morning sun streamed through the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows of the New York Titans’ sports data center in Midtown. I sat calmly at a secondary analysis terminal beside Casey Ferguson, reviewing high-frequency sensor integration streams.
Our diagnostic mandate was clear. Nexus Analytics had been retained to evaluate high-throughput physiological telemetry and predictive performance algorithms for the professional athletic league.
“They’ve assigned us a secondary observation terminal,” Casey whispered, adjusting his tablet with a faint, wry smile. “Typical corporate posturing.”
“Let them, Casey,” I replied softly, my voice perfectly steady. “Our contract is for technical integration. We present the data and conclude our work.”
In my mind, I knew the truth. I had chosen this observer role as a strategic concession, not a demotion. Kensington needed the Carlisle Group’s cooperation, and my quiet presence was the price of that partnership.

Just then, the glass door to the analysis room slid open.
Dayna Nixon walked in wearing a white designer suit and a polished, professional smile. Directly behind her was Blake Carlisle, tall and commanding in a dark team polo. He had brought Dayna along as Carlisle Media’s liaison.
Blake stepped up to Dayna’s side and reached out with calculated familiarity, brushing a stray thread from her collar and leaning in as if to share a private confidence. It was a performance, staged with the same precision he used on the ice, and I was its intended audience.
Dayna played her part beautifully, offering a radiant smile that never reached her eyes.
The technicians lowered their heads, focusing intently on their terminals to escape the awkward atmosphere. To everyone in the room, it looked like a public statement of Dayna’s standing within Carlisle Media’s brand portfolio.
Casey bristled beside me, his jaw tightening. I placed a gentle but firm hand on his arm and gave him a subtle nod. “Focus on the code, Casey. Distractions are worth nothing.”
Blake escorted Dayna to the observation area and gestured for her to sit at the brand liaison console, beside Mr. Shaw’s station.
“We can begin the integration test now, Mr. Shaw,” Blake said, his deep voice cutting through the room.
I shifted my chair slightly, opened my diagnostic terminal, and kept my attention entirely on my assigned data module.
The integration test began. High-frequency performance data scrolled rapidly across the wall display. Blake operated the primary team controls, while Dayna occasionally offered Mr. Shaw some high-level broadcast commentary.
At the secondary terminal, a junior technician began struggling with a high-frequency data buffer synchronization. Sweating under the pressure, he looked to Mr. Shaw for guidance.
Eager to display her broadcast insight, Dayna chimed in smoothly. “Perhaps bypassing the secondary validation layer would speed up the stream sync.”
It was a generic, buzzword-laden suggestion. Blake, absorbed in reviewing the team’s physiological metrics, gave the technician a casual nod without checking the syntax. “Proceed with the sync.”
Taking it as a direct order, the nervous technician executed the command incorrectly.
