Chapter 860:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Dolores turned up the heat and refilled the bowl. Matthew then left with the tray.
Since the afternoon, Carol and Jessica had been busy preparing the food for the evening meeting. The whole table was full of delicacies, but no one was eating them now. Everyone seemed to have lost their appetite.
This time, when Matthew sent out a fresh helping of bun, Jayden only managed to eat two. He said, “Ask …. Kevin to come over.” Matthew went out to call Kevin.
Kevin’s eyes were red and there was moisture in them as well. He sat on the edge of the bed and said, “Anything you want to tell me, I’m all ears.” Jayden began, “I have something to tell you…. If I were to leave, you need to take better care of them.”
Kevin knew who he was referring to. He assured Jayden, “Don’t worry. Your son is Victoria’s son, isn’t he? His wife and children are naturally my relatives too. As long as I’m around, I’ll help you give them affection.”
Jayden nodded slowly as if satisfied with what he had heard.
“I think…I’m almost to her.” His voice was especially hollow and weak.
Kevin took his hand and for some reason he couldn’t stop shaking. He still had something to say, but all he managed to do was let his tears flow. Jayden curved his lips slightly and scoffed, “Why are you crying now?”
Kevin wiped his face and knew that his control of his emotions was deteriorating with his advanced age as well. He said, “I don’t want to cry, but I can’t hold back.”
Jayden was at death’s door, and his mind had transcended everything,

“Aren’t humans bound to face this at some point?”
It was the natural law of life and death. It was something no one could alter.
He breathed hard and his eyes clouded. Yet his mind was strangely crystal clear. She murmured, “Matthew…”.
Kevin immediately caught her intent and went to call Matthew.
Matthew approached Jayden’s bed and Jayden seemed to be in limbo for a moment. He then asked, “Do I look very tired?”.
He said this suddenly.
Matthew said nothing as he silently looked into Jayden’s bloodshot eyes.
Since Kevin was in the family, Matthew never had a good relationship with Jayden. Eventually he left home and rarely returned home. This father and son duo had missed a lot of time together.
In their growing up days, there was a lot of resentment.
This was what hurt him deeply.
He had missed too much, too much…..
“I know, you’ve been lonely…” Suddenly, Jayden raised his hand as if to grab something in the air. Matthew reached down to take the half outstretched hand making sure his palm was against Jayden’s Matthew’s voice was shaky, “You didn’t have many happy memories growing up, and it’s all my fault…. I shouldn’t have kept the truth from you and let you miss out on so much, especially the warmth of an entire family.”
If he had revealed that truth in secret long ago, the three of them would have been a great family with a great relationship.
It was he who planted those regrets in Victoria and Matthew’s hearts.
His regret was deeply rooted.
He slowly let out a slight sigh, but that sigh alone contained all the sorrow in the world.
Matthew felt his airway constrict.
Jayden blinked and his hand faltered, “Ask Lola to see me. I need to talk to her.”
Matthew went to call Dolores.
At the sight of Dolores, a smile broke out on his face. He was very fond of his daughter-in-law, and wouldn’t worry too much about her, “Lola, oh Lola, you need to take care of Matthew for me now.”
Dolores moved to Matthew’s side and nodded, “I will.”
“You’re the obedient one, so I won’t worry…. I feel sorry for him. He never knew what the warmth of a family was before he married you…”
A trickle of tears immediately welled up in her eyes upon hearing that. She hurriedly raised her hand to wipe it away as she looked at Matthew, “He is my husband and the father of my children. We are a family, and I will always take care of him, and give him the family he needs.”
“Well, well…” Jayden sounded breathless as his breathing became intense. Dolores was gripped with fear as she saw his condition, “Dad…”
She thought she was composed enough, but every time she spoke, her voice kept cracking.
Matthew wasn’t as excited as Dolores, but his body was visibly shaking from time to time.
After two minutes, Jayden finally calmed down letting out a sigh, “I’m fine…”
“Where are Amanda and Andrew, why haven’t they come to see me?” If one had to ask him about his regrets, it would be his precious grandchildren.
They were lively, innocent and always surrounded him. Matthew as a child never did that to him, so he could take comfort in these grandchildren and see some shadow of his son from the past.
He saw that Andrew was virtually identical to Matthew as a child, and he always had the illusion that young Matthew had finally come to his side now. It was to fill the void of that lost relationship.
Dolores called the children to her and crouched down beside them. She reminded them, “Grandpa wants to see you both, and whatever Grandpa says next, you are to listen and accept. understood?”
Andrew understood matter-of-factly, and Amanda, on the other hand, was suddenly more mature, which was unusual despite the heavy atmosphere hanging over the house. She nodded like a good girl.
Dolores got up and led them both into the bedroom. They made their way to the bed and she had them positioned by the headboard.
Seeing the two children, Jayden grinned from ear to ear.
“Amanda.”
He reached out to touch Amanda’s face and said, “You look just like your father.”
Andrew was leaning against the bed and added, “I look like you, too.” Jayden smiled winningly.
Amanda also leaned on the bed and took her grandfather’s hand and held it to her face, “Grandpa, I look like you too.”
Jayden said, “You’re my granddaughter…of course you look like me.”
She responded by touching her grandfather’s face as well. His face lacked flesh, and had withered to a frail figure in the days he was ill.
“Concentrate on your studies, and listen to your father and mother…”
“We will.” The two children responded simultaneously.
