Chapter 874:

“None.” Matthew gently closed his eyes.
Dolores was puzzled, “Then why?”.

Then she realized something and asked, “Was it due to money?”. She wasn’t sure, however, as many years had passed without any money-related incidents. So why would anything happen now because of money?
“In the past, there was no one to threaten me.” Matthew patted her forehead and asked, “Do you still have a fever?”
Dolores shook her head and then nodded, “A little, I feel much better.”
“I have some business I need to go take care of. Rest well.” Matthew pulled the blanket up next to Joshua and got him to lie down and said,
“Take a nap. I’ll be home soon.”
Dolores noticed that he looked very tired and haggard. Her heart ached for him. Actually, he must have been feeling very bad since his father had just passed away and Joshua had been kidnapped. Now at least Joshua is safe at home.
She told him tenderly, “I’ll wait for you.”
“It’s okay,” Matthew replied and covered her with the blanket.
He stood up as she closed her eyes. He glanced at Joshua again before leaving.
Jasmine stood up when she saw Matthew come down the stairs. She clutched her hands nervously and said, “How’s Jos?” Matthew acknowledged and Jasmine was extremely relieved.
“Can I take a look at Jos?” Jasmine asked quietly.
“He’s asleep. Maybe later.” Matthew said and walked out of the house. Jasmine nodded quickly.
Boyce called just as Matthew left.
Boyce was in the middle of questioning. The maid who was taking care of Joshua and the driver were witnesses. Investigations had to be done properly.
However, Benjamin and that woman did not want to cooperate and refused to admit that they had kidnapped Jos.
“Are you really coming?” asked Boyce.
He could handle this, but Benjamin was a Nelson instigated to commit such a serious crime. Would Matthew’s presence make things worse?
Matthew said he would go and ended the call. Then he drove to the police station.
Boyce was in the interrogation room and Bruno came out to meet Matthew. He took Matthew to the police station and said, “Mr. Shawn is leading the investigation. We start as soon as we get back.”
Matthew nodded as they walked through the lobby and headed for the interrogation room which was located at the back of the police station.
They soon arrived at the interrogation room, which was divided in two. One half was used for interrogations and the other was an observation room.
In the interrogation room there were two officers. One conducted the interrogation while the other transcribed.
Matthew entered the observation room and observed the interrogation.
“I didn’t kidnap anyone. I just brought my nephew’s son to my house for a day. Is that a crime?” Benjamin refused to admit it, as did the other woman.
Boyce showed the photograph of the driver and the caregiver and said, “According to their statements, you kidnapped and held for ransom.”
“What proof do they have?” Benjamin wagered that the police had no credible evidence and that’s why he was so defiant.
“I demand to see my lawyer,” Benjamin demanded.
Boyce leaned forward and asked, “You don’t know?”
Benjamin looked at him warily and asked, “What do you mean?”
Boyce laughed and provoked him, “The woman who instigated you has already confessed. She said you had been the one who had planned this. She said you had harbored a discontent against Matthew that resulted in the kidnapping to extort money from Matthew.”
“She said that?” Benjamin stared hard into her eyes. He raised his eyebrows and didn’t believe Boyce.
“Of course! She even said that you forced her to do this and that she had no choice in the matter. She said you coerced her into doing everything…”
“Impossible! She was the one who instigated this. She said Matthew treated me unfairly. Even Joshua’s kidnapping was her idea. I would have acted long ago if I had such thoughts. Do I have to wait until now?” Benjamin was incapable of thinking clearly under pressure.
He lived a life of luxury all this time and didn’t know how to handle such situations.
“So you admitted it was a kidnapping?” Boyce laughed.
“I didn’t.” Benjamin denied it again.
Boyce pointed to the video cameras on either side of the table and said, “This is an interrogation room. Your every move, your every word is being recorded. Your denial is too late.”
Benjamin became agitated and shouted, “She tricked me.”
“She said she was coerced by you and now you say you were tricked, which one of you is lying?” Boyce continued his interrogation.
Although he had the authority, he could not abuse it. Nor could he let his personal feelings get in the way of official business. However, he could not let this matter rest so easily. Joshua felt hurt by them and had to use some interrogation tactics against them. For example, to turn the two suspects against each other.
“Of course it’s her!” Benjamin was so angry that he wanted to get up. However, he was handcuffed to the chair bolted to the floor and could not get up.
“Don’t get agitated. I’m asking you to ask her.” Boyce ordered the woman brought in. Next, Boyce approached Benjamin and released him from the seat. He then said to Benjamin, “Between you and her, I tend to trust you more. After all, you are Matthew’s uncle. If you harbored any ill intent, you would have acted much sooner and not waited until now to do it at this age, am I right?”
Benjamin rubbed his wrists and glanced at Boyce. It looked like Boyce was taking his side, but again, what Boyce said didn’t sit well with him.
What did Boyce mean by “at this age”? He wasn’t young but he wasn’t that old either.
Soon the woman was brought in and Boyce said to the transcriber, “Let’s go.”
The transcriber closed the book and left with Boyce.
“Benjamin.” The woman still regarded Benjamin as her savior. When Boyce questioned her, she said nothing and refused to admit it was a kidnapping.
She grabbed Benjamin’s elbow and said, “Call the lawyer quickly to get us out of here.”
Benjamin pushed her away and said coldly, “Even if the lawyer comes, he’ll only bail me out!”
The woman was stunned and looked at him with wide eyes, “But I am your wife…”
“My wife?” Benjamin scoffed, “Did you think of that when you betrayed me?”
She was stunned and asked, “When did I betray you?”
“Are you acting?” Benjamin pinched her chin and asked, “Are you still acting? Didn’t you tell them I kidnapped Jos? Didn’t you say you were coerced by me? You sure know how to deflect responsibility – are you trying to dump all this on me?”
The woman was perplexed. When had she said all this?
“You, are you wrong?” The woman tried to explain, “I don’t…”
“You still won’t admit it? You, on the one hand, act so loyally towards me while, on the other hand, you try to put all the blame on me.” Benjamin said.
“I didn’t.” The woman shook her head and pleaded, “You must believe me.”
“How can you make me believe you?” Benjamin pushed the woman angrily. The woman lost her balance and hit her head against the door as she fell to the floor. She winced in pain and sat miserably on the floor.
Inside the observation room, Matthew and Boyce watched on the screen what was happening in the interrogation room.
Boyce took one look at the wincing woman and sneered, “Isn’t it interesting to watch them chase each other.”
