Chapter 230:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
He looked to be in his early twenties, slender, with soft, flaxen hair and gentle brown eyes. The scent of an Omega clung to him.
I looked at Demetri, a question in my eyes.
“Haven, this is Lyle Parsons,” Demetri said. “One of my personal attendants. From today, he will be taking over for Rory, in charge of your daily needs.”
I was surprised. “What about Rory? She was doing a fine job.”
Demetri shook his head. “She’s an excellent warrior, but not a suitable personal guard. Her warrior’s aura is too aggressive. It makes you uncomfortable.”
He continued, his gaze steady on mine. “Lyle is different. He’s an Omega, more attentive, and he knows how to care for people. Most importantly, he won’t make you feel threatened in any way.”
His last words were pointed. He was telling me, in his own way, that he was already upholding his vow. He wouldn’t allow any woman who could be perceived as a rival to get close to me.
A faint heat rose in my cheeks. I looked away, flustered by his directness.
Lyle bowed respectfully. “Luna, it is an honor to serve you.” His voice was soft and calming.

I nodded, accepting Demetri’s arrangement.
Demetri dismissed Lyle to get settled, and the study was quiet again. He wheeled himself over to my desk, his eyes landing on the paper where I’d scribbled my notes.
“What’s this?” he asked, his curiosity piqued.
My heart skipped a beat. I quickly covered the paper with my hand. “Nothing. Just random thoughts.”
He didn’t press the issue, but his gaze was so sharp I felt he could see right through me.
To change the subject, I asked, “How are the preparations for the Pack council meeting? That finance minister…”
The diversion worked. Demetri began explaining the intricate politics of the Pack, his plan to deal with his opponents in the upcoming meeting.
As he spoke, he leaned forward, closing the distance between us.
I was suddenly acutely aware of everything. The clean, cold scent of cedar from his skin. The way his long lashes cast faint shadows on his cheeks.
My heart started to beat a frantic rhythm against my ribs. My breathing grew shallow.
I tried to lean back, to create some space, but my chair was already against the wall. I had nowhere to go.
I was trapped. Pinned between the desk and his body in a small, charged, and intensely intimate space.
Demetri seemed oblivious, his low, melodic voice continuing to weave a complex tapestry of political intrigue.
But I knew better. He was doing this on purpose. He was using business as a cover to test my boundaries, to shrink the physical space between us.
My face grew hotter and hotter. My brain, starved of oxygen, went blank. All I could focus on was him, his presence overwhelming my senses.
This man, I thought with a jolt of panic, was a master hunter. And he was boiling me alive, one slow, deliberate degree at a time.
