Chapter 1161:(END)

He paused, his voice steady and even, no trace of edge or jealousy in it. “Brogan restructured Clements Global from the ground up — stripped out every non-compliant pharmaceutical arm and shifted the company’s focus to generic drug development for low-income communities. He’s overseen the construction of twelve rural hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa over the last six months. He sends partnership proposals to the foundation every quarter, all strictly public health focused, no personal notes, no hidden agendas. His team checks in with Katie once a month about the collaborative research grants, nothing more.”
June’s thumb brushed the back of his hand in a quiet, steady motion. “And Cole.”
“He resigned from the Compton Group six weeks ago. He opened a small private investment firm in Vermont — sustainable agriculture and rural community grants, nothing that would put him back in the public eye. He hasn’t reached out, hasn’t filed any legal paperwork regarding your assets, hasn’t set foot in Boston since the foundation opening. My team confirms he still tracks your research publications and public speaking events. No further action.”
A single maple leaf swirled down from the branches above and landed in June’s hair. Easton reached up with his free hand and plucked it free, letting it drift to the ground between them. The sun hung low now, painting the clouds in streaks of pink and purple, the first of the city’s streetlights flickering on along the path.
“They’re all waiting, aren’t they.” June’s voice was quiet — not with fear, but with a calm, clear-eyed acceptance. Her fingers tightened around his, solid and sure. “For a crack. For a mistake. For a moment they think they can step back in.”
Easton drew her close with his free arm, his hand resting warm and steady at the small of her back. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head, his lips brushing her hair, the scent of her shampoo mixing with the crisp autumn air. “They can wait as long as they like. It doesn’t change a thing for us.”
Snowball chose that moment to let out a sharp, indignant huff from the stroller, her tiny paws scrabbling against the mesh door.
June laughed and pulled back from his chest, bending down to the stroller and running her fingers through the soft fur on Snowball’s head. She fished a small dried carrot stick from her pocket and held it through the mesh, the rabbit snatching it up with greedy little teeth.
Easton watched them, his shoulders loose and relaxed, the hard, guarded edge he had carried when they first met long since dissolved — and only for her. The setting sun caught the gold rims of his glasses and gilded the edges of his hair. His gaze never left her face.
When June straightened and slipped her hand back into his, pressing her side close against him as they started walking again, the river stretched out beside them — endless and steady, the city lights beginning to surface on its water like scattered stars.

“What happens next, then,” June said softly, her head resting lightly against his arm as they walked, the stroller rolling smoothly over the paved path ahead.
“Whatever we want,” Easton said, his voice low and warm, his arm tightening around her shoulders. “The foundation is growing faster than we projected. The Phase Three trial data comes back next month. The firm is stable. We have time. We have each other.”
He pressed a kiss to her temple, his lips lingering against her skin. “The fight is over for us, June. We get to live now. Exactly the way we want to.”
June smiled and tilted her head up to kiss him — soft and slow, the wind tangling her hair around their faces, the distant sound of a boat’s horn floating in off the river. When she pulled back, her eyes were bright, shining with the same light he had fallen in love with, the same fire that had never once dimmed.
Through every battle, every threat, every attempt to break her.
The sun dipped fully below the horizon, the sky deepening to indigo, the city lights glowing brighter around them. Snowball rustled in her stroller and settled in for the evening, the faint crunch of her hay the only sound beside their footsteps on the path.
June squeezed Easton’s hand, lacing their fingers even tighter together, and turned them toward home. The path stretched out ahead, lined with glowing streetlights, leaves crunching softly underfoot, the river flowing steady alongside them.
The men who had once circled her — who had tried to own her, to control her, to cage her — waited in the shadows still. They watched, they waited, they clung to the hope of a chance that would never come. But none of it touched her. Not anymore.
She had her research. Her foundation. Her team. The life she had built with her own two hands, brick by brick, fight by fight. She had the man beside her, who loved her as an equal — who stood with her, never in front of her, never behind her. She had a home, and a fat, spoiled rabbit, and a future that stretched out ahead of her, bright and unwritten and entirely hers.
The wind picked up again, swirling fallen maple leaves around their feet and carrying the sound of laughter from a group of students further down the path, the faint jingle of a dog’s collar, the quiet lap of the river against the shore. June leaned into Easton’s side, and they walked on — toward the glowing lights of home, toward the life they had built, toward every beautiful, unplanned moment still to come.
