Chapter 579:

He had let her go.
The realization hit like a physical blow, staggering in its unexpectedness. She had prepared for pursuit, for capture, for the inevitable moment when his patience expired and he dragged her back into his orbit by force.
Instead, she was alone.
She walked to the window and pressed her forehead against the glass — cold and slick with rain. Forty stories below, the city moved in patterns of light and shadow, millions of lives proceeding without knowledge of her existence.
Her phone buzzed. An unknown number. She ignored it. Let it fall silent, then buzz again, then go quiet once more.
The third time, a text message appeared. No words. Just an image — a photograph of her, taken from an impossible angle. From the driver’s-side headrest, by the look of it. She was bent over her own phone, her face illuminated by the screen, a secret smile playing on her lips as she saved the picture of him.

Beneath it, three words: You missed a spot.
Her blood ran cold. It wasn’t just her phone that was compromised — it was the entire car. The entire world he built around her. She vaguely remembered him sending this phone to her months ago, a sleek top-of-the-line model to replace her old one after it had been “accidentally” damaged. A thoughtful gesture. A gilded cage.
A second text arrived before she could process the first.
The phone I gave you has many features. You should explore them all.
She stared at the screen until it went dark. Until her reflection appeared in its surface — ghostly and distorted, a woman with rubies in her ears and a box in her hands and no idea how to be free.
Then her phone rang again. A different number. One she knew all too well.
Kevin. The timing was so absurd, so cosmically tone-deaf, it was almost funny.
She answered with a flat, exhausted sigh. “What?”
“Do you know what your problem is?” The words poured out of him, venomous and desperate. “You’re pathetic. You’re boring, and you think winning some stupid city contract makes you special?”
“Kevin —”
“You’re nothing!” He was shouting now, his voice echoing from wherever he was. “Nothing compared to her. Do you know what Cedrick’s been doing in Paris? He’s with some model — some gorgeous woman who actually knows how to be a woman. Not a frigid, painted freak like you.”
The sheer, pathetic irony of it — of him lusting after her image while despising her reality — was so profound, so utterly ridiculous, that a bubble of hysteria rose in her chest.
Laughter.
Isidora was laughing. Softly at first, then harder, until she was gasping, the sound wet and broken and entirely devoid of humor.
“You —” she managed, “— you have absolutely no idea. You complete, absolute —”
