Chapter 582:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
He indulged it anyway. Standing in the dark, watching the rain, waiting for morning and the next move in their endless game.
Across the city, in an apartment that smelled of her perfume and her tears, Isidora stared at the name on her phone screen.
Iris. The name felt like a violation — a branding iron pressed against her soul. It wasn’t Anna Reed, not Siena, not any of the disposable masks she wore for the world. It was the name her mother had whispered to her in the dark, a secret garden no one else was meant to enter. And he had walked into it, his boots trampling the flowers, claiming it as his own.
A wave of nausea and cold fury washed over her, more potent than any physical threat. He hadn’t just cornered her body. He was laying claim to her very identity.
She sat on the edge of a bed she hadn’t chosen and, with a new and chilling sense of purpose, opened a drawer she had never noticed before.
Inside: a phone. Old model, black, the kind that governments used and criminals coveted. A note in handwriting she didn’t recognize — block letters without personality. The style sparked a flicker of memory, a similar anonymous warning she had received months ago, a message that had saved her from a disastrous business deal.
For when you’re ready to stop running.
She stared at it for a long time. The rain drummed against the windows. The city breathed and sighed and continued without her.
Then, slowly, she reached for it. Powered it on. Created a new contact with a name that was half joke, half confession, and entirely true.
B.

She didn’t send a message. Didn’t call. Just held the phone in her hand, feeling its weight, its potential, its promise of connection that was entirely on her own terms.
Tomorrow, she would fight him again. Would find new ways to resist, to escape, to remind them both that she was not his.
But tonight, for the first time, she allowed herself to hold the means of reaching him. Of being reached.
The rubies burned against her ears — twelve million dollars of claim and counterclaim, possession and resistance, all the things they couldn’t say in words.
She didn’t take them off.
She lay back against the pillows, the strange phone clutched in her hand, and waited for morning.
