Chapter 392: (END)

I tilted my head slightly. “And that’s exactly why neither of you belongs in our lives,” I said coolly. “It was never about the name, or the money. It’s your character that needed fixing. You needed a reason to treat me decently, and unfortunately, you showed your true colors long before you knew who I really was.”
I didn’t wait for a response. I didn’t want to hear one. I turned and walked away, no anger, no raised voice, just the quiet peace of finally not needing to prove myself to anyone.
By the time we got home that night, the house was silent. The kids had gone home with my grandparents for the evening.
For once, it was just Alex and me.
Upstairs, he leaned against the doorframe, watching as I slipped off my heels and changed into something more comfortable.
“You looked beautiful tonight,” he said finally, his low voice breaking the quiet.
I glanced at him. “And you looked like you wanted to devour me the entire evening.”
He smiled. “Can’t argue with that.”
I laughed, shaking my head as I crossed the room to him, kissing him slowly, my fingers tracing the light stubble along his jaw.

“Are you okay?” I asked.
He nodded. “Just thinking about everything we’ve been through. How I fought you, doubted you, hurt you,” he said quietly. “But now, choosing you every single day, seeing things clearly, it makes me realize how much I love you, and how much I need to protect this family.”
I blinked slowly, his words warming me from the inside, goosebumps rising across my skin.
He kissed along my shoulder, up my neck, to my collarbone. “I didn’t get nearly enough of you tonight.”
I laughed softly. “Take it easy, Alex,” I warned. “You do remember we have another baby on the way.”
“Of course I do,” he said, lifting me into his arms. “All the more reason to make the most of this, before the cravings and swollen feet take over.”
He carried me to the bed, and after such a long, exhausting day, it felt like heaven. His touch was slow, careful, like he was rediscovering me all over again.
I couldn’t have been more grateful the kids were with my family, and that, finally, it was just Alex and me.
