Chapter 499:

Darya glanced at him. “You can head back to the office first. I’ll handle this.”
Rolando nodded and departed.
“I don’t want to go to the police!” Jack sniffled, blinking his big eyes as he pleaded, “Can I… can I go home with you?”
Darya’s eyes widened, surprised by the boy’s request. He was undeniably adorable, but it was all so sudden. What if his family came looking for him?
Seeing Darya’s hesitation, Jack began sobbing again. “I know you don’t want me… just like my mother…”
“What about your family?”
“They don’t want me. Nobody wants me.”
His words tugged at Darya’s heart, stirring a twinge of pain within her. After careful consideration, she finally relented. “All right, I’ll take you home with me. Only for the time being, though. You have to behave, okay?”
Jack’s tearful face instantly transformed into a bright smile. “Okay! I promise to be a good boy!”
True to his words, Jack obediently followed Darya, clutching her hand tightly as they made their way back to the office.
That afternoon, Darya worked with Jasper and the auditors, while Jack curled up on a sofa in the office, eyes glued to a PlayStation screen. Darya had taken a picture of the boy and dispatched an assistant to ask around.
Occasionally, Darya glanced up from her tasks and caught sight of Jack shaking his head, probably having just lost another round of games. The adorable sight melted her heart.
For a brief moment, Darya found herself enjoying the company of this cute and well-behaved child. It wasn’t as unpleasant an experience as she had initially thought.
As the workday drew to a close, the assistant had yet to receive any news about Jack’s family. Darya took his hand and left the company, intending to treat him to dinner.

However, just as they reached the lobby, Darya’s eyes landed on Micah. Amidst her hectic schedule, Darya had momentarily forgotten about him.
His complexion indicated significant recovery since their last encounter.
A spark of uncontainable joy flickered in Micah’s eyes at the sight of her, but it quickly faded when he noticed Jack by her side. His brow furrowed slightly as he approached her. “Who is this?”
“I found him by chance,” Darya replied, gently stroking Jack’s head.
Jack, with a glare of hostility, hid behind Darya and shouted at Micah, “You bad man, stay away from my big sister!” The remark elicited mixed reactions.
Darya beamed with a radiant smile, while Micah’s face darkened with each passing moment.
Behind Micah, Norris struggled to suppress his laughter, fearing that doing so in front of Micah would be disastrous. He had just been summoned to Gavarnia and didn’t want to be put on the next plane back to Hagen.
