Chapter 610:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Amelia froze, her struggles ceasing. “Mr. Thornton?” she whispered, her mind reeling. “Garrett?”
The man nodded. “Yes. The situation is urgent. Please come with us.”
She was suspicious, but the mention of Garrett’s name was a lifeline for her chaotic mind. Maybe this was an emergency evacuation arranged by Clarence. A sliver of hope cut through her terror.
She allowed them to “escort” her downstairs. The house’s security system had been smashed, and several of the guards Clarence had assigned lay bound and unconscious on the floor.
In the Langley ballroom, soft music played as guests mingled. Brice Langley, one of the evening’s hosts, moved through the crowd in a dark suit and gold-rimmed glasses, laughing and chatting with business magnates.
He looked refined, almost scholarly, but behind the lenses his eyes were like a snake’s, flicking across the room as if searching for prey.
Garrett and Casey Henderson entered the ballroom. Garrett’s straight back and powerful presence drew eyes from every corner.
Brice saw him and raised his champagne flute in a silent toast, a knowing, meaningful smile playing on his lips.
Outside the safe house, Amelia was forced into the back of a black SUV. She was wedged between the two silent men as the vehicle sped off into the storm-tossed night.
A deep unease settled in her stomach. Something was wrong. This didn’t feel right.
A moment later, her fears were confirmed. In the side mirror, two blinding headlights appeared out of the darkness. A matching SUV was tailing them, closing the distance fast.

The man beside her spoke into a walkie-talkie, his voice a low growl. “We’ve got a tail. Lose them!”
The driver stomped on the accelerator. The SUV fishtailed on the slick pavement and rocketed forward into the night. The chase had begun.
Amelia’s heart sank into a cold, dark pit. If these were Thornton’s men, why were they running?
In the car behind them, Sid Sutton, Clarence’s head of security, gripped his own radio, his face grim. “Target vehicle is fleeing! They are not our people! Repeat, they are not our people! Initiate Plan B! Intercept!”
The two SUVs tore through the downpour. Amelia was thrown against the door as the car swerved, the jarring motion making her gasp as another wave of pain radiated from her abdomen.
Now she knew it for certain.
She had fallen into the hands of the enemy. The “rescue” had been a lie from the very beginning.
The SUV swerved violently, tires screaming on the wet asphalt as the driver fought to shake the pursuing vehicle.
Amelia gripped the door handle, her knuckles white. Every jarring bump sent a fresh wave of pain through her, tightening the knot in her belly.
She forced herself to breathe. Calm down. Think.
These men weren’t rescuers. So who were they? Brice Langley’s?
She looked at the two expressionless men flanking her and risked a question, her voice trembling slightly. “Who are you? This isn’t the way to the airport.”
