Chapter 630:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
The words broke the quiet of the room. Sterling and Brooke both turned toward the door. Casey stood framed against the backlight, his features shrouded in shadow, his expression unreadable, yet an unmistakable undercurrent of resentment hung about him.
“Mr. Henderson.” Sterling rose and greeted him warmly. “Please, come in.”
“Really. Couldn’t have picked a worse time.” Brooke’s face turned frigid, and she headed for the stairs to avoid him. She had warned Casey never to meet Sterling, and she guessed he was here on account of Brice. Since Garrett had sent him, there was little she could say.
Sterling glanced awkwardly at Brooke’s retreating figure. “I’m sorry. She’s just in a foul mood today. It’s nothing personal.”
Casey nodded with a faint, knowing smile.
“Bring some tea,” Sterling instructed the servant.
The two men sat facing each other. Sterling maintained his affable demeanor. “Did Garrett send you? Or is this about my cousin?”
He could guess without Casey saying a word. Apart from this matter, Casey would never dare come to his home openly.
“Yes.” Casey lowered his gaze, organizing his thoughts as he took in the residence. A house like this could not be bought at any price these days.
Truth be told, he had money now, yet even with his accomplishments he remained insignificant beside an established clan like the Langleys. Brooke would have a far better life married into this family than she ever would have had with him.
“Mr. Henderson?”

Casey had drifted off. Sterling’s voice pulled him back. He straightened and met Sterling’s eyes squarely. “I’ve uncovered several suspicious points surrounding Brice these past few days. I was hoping to ask you about matters within your family.”
At the mention of Brice, Sterling looked troubled. “I don’t know much about my cousin’s side of the family, but I can speak to Mother. She may have answers.”
“It’s nothing major. I’m simply trying to find out whether anything significant occurred after the Langley fire.” Casey knew the question was vague. “What I mean is… was the family patriarch gravely ill, close to death, around that time?”
Sterling had not yet returned home then. The old man had been critically unwell, and the branches of the family had clashed viciously over the inheritance. According to the will, assets were divided per household member; whichever branch had more children naturally received a larger share.
“That’s all I picked up from overhearing the elders talk when I was small. I can’t vouch for its accuracy.”
“That is enough.” Casey breathed out in relief and accepted the teacup handed to him. After such a long investigation, he finally had a lead. “Thank you for your time.”
Having gotten what he came for, he stood to leave.
“Won’t you stay longer? You could join us for dinner.”
“I can’t.” Casey lifted his eyes and glanced meaningfully toward the upper floor, where Brooke had gone. “I won’t intrude on your marital time. Was Miss Brooke upset just now?”
“She wasn’t angry. She’s only teasing me.” Sterling did not wish to discuss Brooke further. “I’ll see you out.”
Sterling walked Casey to the entrance and watched him drive away.
