Chapter 600:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Paul glared at Renee, his breath hitching for a moment.
The butler intervened at once, steadying him and helping him regulate his breathing. Then he turned to Renee with a stern look. “Mrs. Renee King, mind your words.”
Who would have thought that Renee, usually cheerful and easygoing, would lash out like this?
But Renee didn’t see it as rebellion at all.
To her, Paul’s passivity in handling Sebastian’s death—and the years of public scorn Marcelo had endured because of it—was infuriating.

Renee was fiercely protective. She wasn’t afraid of offending Paul. Besides, they were in a hospital, surrounded by doctors and medical equipment. There was no reason to worry.
“You split the roles of family head and CEO between Gary and Marcelo to balance power,” Renee said with a faint smile. “You also knew that once someone becomes useless, they become vulnerable.”
That was why she didn’t believe Paul would truly hand the CEO position to Gary or Andrew.
Paul’s gaze turned icy.
After a brief pause, Renee continued, “Paul, doesn’t your sudden cerebral hemorrhage seem unusual? You’ve always been health-conscious, and your blood pressure has been well controlled. What could have caused this?”
Paul didn’t want to admit it, but her words hit home. She was right. Even if it bruised his pride, he had to acknowledge it.
“You can’t have Joselyn step down as CEO,” Marcelo said abruptly.
He was a man of few words, speaking only when necessary. After that, and seeing Paul had nothing more to say, Marcelo took Renee’s hand and led her out.
He had fulfilled his duty as a grandson by visiting. There was nothing else for him to do there.
When Gary and his family returned to the ward later, they smothered Paul with exaggerated concern. It was obviously calculated—because even as they fussed over him, they always managed to slip in remarks that subtly discredited Marcelo.
Their goal was simple: wrest control away from Joselyn.
Of course, Paul knew exactly what they were doing.
He simply pretended he didn’t.
Paul mulled over Marcelo’s words before he’d left, and he had to admit Marcelo had a point.
Joselyn had exceptional abilities. The shareholders might accept her being replaced by Marcelo, but it would be a different matter if she were replaced by Andrew or Gary. That could destabilize the group.
Renee was right, too.
When someone has been bedridden for years, even their loved ones—especially their children and grandchildren—gradually stop visiting and caring for them. And more importantly… Paul had always believed his illness was an unfortunate accident. But now, the seed of doubt planted in his mind refused to be soothed.
He had finally learned the truth behind Sebastian’s death, and the guilt he felt toward Marcelo was suffocating.
Marcelo had lost both his father and brother. Then his mother became mentally ill. It was as if Marcelo had been stripped of everyone he held dear. As his grandfather, Paul should have protected him. Instead, he had treated Marcelo like an enemy.
For two days, Paul endured Gary and his family lingering in the hospital ward. Oddly enough, their constant presence lifted his spirits slightly.
But when the doctors later told him he would be bedridden for the rest of his life, Paul finally snapped.
To him, it was no different from death.
He was so furious he couldn’t even stand seeing Gary and his family anymore, and he had them thrown out.
“Sir, we’ve found no evidence of foul play by Gary and his family,” the butler reported. “He is your son, and he has always treated you with the utmost respect. It’s impossible that he would ever harm you.”
Under normal circumstances, Paul would never have doubted Gary’s intentions. But things were different now.
Accepting life as a paralytic was not easy. The helplessness made him restless, irritable, and prone to suspicion. The more he lay there unable to move, the more his mind spiraled.
Everyone around him began to look suspicious.
