Chapter 336:
By the gods. Is this what was meant for her? Aekeira shuddered. No wonder he had warned her, urged her to run.
Unable to bear the sight any longer, she buried her head in the silken sheets, her body wracked with tremors at every strike. Arousal waned, leaving her cold despite the warmth of the sheets around her. Finally, the strokes ceased. Only the slavemaster’s whimpers and ragged breaths remained.
Tentatively, she lifted her head, peeking out from beneath the sheets. Slavemaster Tyke lay crumpled on the floor, his body battered and bleeding.
Lord Vladya crouched before him, lifting the man’s chin casually, forcing him to meet his eyes.
“I lied, Tyke,” Lord Vladya said calmly. “This is not an honor strike. This is a punishment.”
He nodded toward Aekeira, who flinched at the acknowledgment. “You hurt her.” His hand caressed a trail of blood from the slavemaster’s cheek. “The next time you do, I will have your colleagues whip you in front of the entire square, where every slave and master alike will witness it. Do you want that?”
Slavemaster Tyke’s eyes went wide, terror flashing across his face as tears streamed down his cheeks. “No, Your Highness. Please, I swear on my life it will never happen again!”
“From today onward, you are responsible for her protection,” Lord Vladya continued coolly. “Ensure that none of the other slavemasters mistreat, overwork, or even look at her the wrong way. If I receive even a whisper of a single complaint… you will answer for it. Do you understand?”
MISTRESS SINAI
Mistress Sinai walked gracefully through the garden just beyond the fortress gates, relishing the evening air. The scent of blooming flowers drifted around her, calming her nerves.

“Ha-have you heard the rumors, mistress?” Nora asked hesitantly from behind.
Sinai glanced over her shoulder, raising an eyebrow. “What makes you think I care about rumors, Nora? It is beneath a lady to involve herself in gossip.”
“Of course, mistress. I apologize.” Nora’s eyes dropped to the cobblestones.
But Sinai’s curiosity was piqued. She cleared her throat. “What’s the rumor about?”
“They say Emeriel has been away from the fortress for days,” Nora whispered conspiratorially.
“Really?” Sinai’s heart quickened.
Just the mention of his name stirred several emotions in her. She took a deep, calming breath, feigning nonchalance.
“Did he escape? Run away?” A thrill of excitement shot through her at the thought. Good riddance.
“Oh no, mistress. The rumors say he is… having intimate relations with a high lord. He’s been spending an awful lot of time at the high lord’s estate.”
Sinai’s steps faltered. Intimate relations? Not what she had expected to hear. What was it about that boy that made these powerful men take notice? It baffled her to no end. He was handsome, sure—pretty, even—but so were many others.
Well, if it keeps him busy enough to stay away from my Daemon, I’m all for it. Sinai’s lips twisted into a wry smile.
Emerging from the garden, Sinai spotted a group of Greyrock soldiers in formation ahead of her. At their center, she noticed Grand Lord Zaiper.
She approached him, a demure smile gracing her features.
“Ah, our lovely mistress, Sinai,” Zaiper greeted, his own smile slow and deliberate. “A pleasure to see you.”
