Chapter 1688:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Austin recognized Maggie and the others. Surprise filled his face. “Mom, why did you come here? Didn’t I warn you about the danger?”
Brushing off his concern, Maggie answered, “We missed Yelena too much. That’s why we had to come anyway.”
Her gaze moved across the crowd until she spotted Alina—bound and disguised as Yelena.
She paused, scanning every face, until her eyes rested on Yelena, who was dressed in Alina’s clothes. “Yelena.”
A nod came from Yelena. “Maggie.”
Maggie had waited so long to see Yelena again that she could hardly contain her joy. Tears sprang to her eyes, and she nearly broke down from the overwhelming happiness. “You’re safe now, Yelena.”
Donna and the others closed in, eager to welcome Yelena back.
Safe in the heart of her family, Yelena felt like a child wrapped in their affection. Alina’s brow furrowed as anger flared in her eyes.
No matter how alike she and Yelena appeared, it frustrated her that people could always tell them apart without a moment’s hesitation.
While this played out, Brody leaned over to whisper with Cayson. “Up on the mountain, it was so dark that picking out Yelena was impossible. Now, with clear daylight, it’s obvious who’s who.”
Cayson agreed. “That’s right. I could never mistake my sister for anyone else.”
Callum threw Cayson a skeptical look. “Seriously, Cayson? Are you telling me you couldn’t even recognize your own sister?”
“Come on, Dad! It was just the shadows and bad lighting. Besides, I never truly mixed them up. I only hesitated for a moment.”
A sharp laugh escaped Callum. “Yelena really got the short end of the stick having a brother like you.”
Faced with that, Cayson just kept quiet, figuring silence would save him from more embarrassment.

Right then, once Maggie had checked to see that Yelena was safe, she swept her eyes over the crowd. Her gaze locked on Coulson, and she stiffened in surprise. “Wait… who is that man?”
Austin’s face tightened. He had dreaded the moment his mother would have to learn the truth about her husband’s betrayal. Maggie’s feelings for Austin’s father ran deep, and the truth would cut her to the core.
Despite Austin’s hesitation, Maggie moved toward Coulson and spoke up. “Tell me, do you know someone called Lilian Reed? You two look too alike.” The directness of her question caught Coulson off guard. He gave a harsh, bitter laugh. “Yes. She is my mother. All of you ruined her life, and I’m here to make you pay for it!”
Maggie could only sigh, her shoulders sagging. “I never expected her to tell you things that way.”
A cold, searching look from Coulson met Maggie’s eyes, as if he hoped to uncover the truth hidden in her face. “If that’s not how it happened, then what’s the real story?”
