The price of revenge – Sneak Peek
THE UNFORGIVABLE ACT
“Happy birthday, our prince,” my dad said for the thousandth time today. I smiled brightly. My parents and I had just returned from celebrating my 13th birthday at my dad’s newly opened hotel.
“Afonso, my prince, when you turn 23, ten years from now, you will take over Dad’s hotel,” my mom said.
“Really, Mom? That big hotel is mine?” I asked, beaming with excitement.
“Your dad already registered both your name and your little sister’s name there, Afonso Junior,” she replied, smiling. My mom was heavily pregnant, just a month away from welcoming my little sister after 13 years of waiting. “I love you, Daddy and Mommy. I promise I’ll always be the best older brother to my sister,” I said, smiling proudly.
Suddenly, a car came speeding toward us, heading straight in our direction. My dad quickly swerved to the left, and Mom held me tightly to her. But the car swerved too, crashing into us. I screamed in terror, but in that moment, Mom smiled at me and hugged me tighter, slowly closing her eyes. I couldn’t speak or scream; it was as if my voice had vanished.
A man staggered out of the car that had crashed into us, holding his neck. He approached us and glared at my dad. My heart raced with fear. He pulled out his phone, his hands trembling. I believed he was drunk.
“Hello, Mom,” he muttered, but I couldn’t hear the voice on the other end.
“I just had a little accident,” he continued. “These people crashed into my car, and they aren’t moving. I think they’re dead. There’s a child here too.” He shifted the phone from his ear and closed his eyes, as though someone was yelling at him from the other side. After he finished talking, he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Just one more day until I’m appointed chairman, and then this little trouble shows up. I can’t even have fun without trouble,” he complained, kicking the tires of his car angrily.
Some time later, as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard sirens, and I smiled, whispering, “My parents are saved.”
I slowly opened my eyes. I was in a hospital bed. People were staring at me, but the only face I recognized was the man who had crashed into our car. Fear gripped me as I saw the way he was looking at me, as if he wanted to strangle me.

I thought to myself,
“Why is he here instead of the police station?” I thought to myself. The doctor approached me, examining my eyes.
“Can you see me?” he asked, and I nodded in response.
“What is your name?” he inquired, but I couldn’t answer.
The doctor motioned to the man who had hit my parents, as well as to an elderly woman standing beside him. She had been staring at me with eyes filled with guilt and pity.
“Afonso can’t talk, and he has lost 13 years of memories. It’s like he’s a child just starting to form new memories,” the doctor explained. “But once he overcomes the shock, he will start speaking again. The smoke from the fire affected his lungs, so he needs gentle care to heal.”
I thought to myself, “But I can talk, and I remember everything. I just choose not to. Why is he saying I can’t remember? And why did he mention a fire? My hands and legs are burned, but I don’t understand why. I know I wasn’t in a fire. How did I get these burns?”
Suddenly, my parents’ picture appeared on the TV, and they were discussing their accident.
“The new president of Martins Corporation, whose driver killed a man, his pregnant wife, and his son last month when he crashed into another car while driving home intoxicated, was sentenced to life in prison this morning,” the woman on the TV announced.
I stared at the screen, stunned. “But that’s the man, not the one on TV,” I muttered under my breath when a picture of the man was shown.
“But I’m alive. Why are they reporting me as dead?” I thought, confused. “Why are they mentioning Martins Corporation? What if our stock prices drop?” Martinz Junior’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Can you just shut up?” Helena Martinz snapped at him, before turning to me with a fake smile. “Your name is Afonso Martinz. I am your stepmother,” she said.
“Mom, why are you bringing him into our house after his mother abandoned him? Why not send him to an orphanage?” Martinz Junior said to his mother, his voice laced with bitterness.
“Your father’s will included his name, and you can’t receive your inheritance without him being present,” she replied, still forcing a smile at me.
