Chapter 1669:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
His words were nothing short of degrading, and he didn’t bother to hide the disdain from showing.
Lindsay felt a pang of humiliation. She suddenly regretted having turned to Robin for help.
Since Joann’s incident, she had cut ties with her. And Lindsay was never truly accepted by the elite circles despite living with the Clark family for most of her life.
Thus, she had no one else to turn to.
In her desperation, she sought out Robin. Now, it was looking more and more like a very bad decision.
Lindsay tried to comfort herself. If the scoundrel proved to be a threat to her, she would never hesitate to get rid of him, once and for all.
Robin continued with his despicable tirade, while Lindsay remained silent. On the surface, she was docile and submissive, but there was a glint of determination in her lowered eyes.
Leona watched and listened to him without showing an ounce of sympathy for Lindsay. “Sending you to the Clark family was planned by Lucia’s friend,” she explained. “We are your real family, Lindsay, the ones who truly care for you.”
Lindsay almost laughed in her face. Leona’s blatant hypocrisy disgusted her. Still, Lindsay nodded obediently and said, “I understand.”
Although the Wheeler family had never treated her well, they still served as a semblance of support when she was weak and helpless. Never mind that they were always unreliable.
Leona was pleased by Lindsay’s apparent compliance. After comforting her a bit more with empty words of concern, the old lady forged ahead with her main purpose. “When Matthew gets here, ask him to put up a store for you. This is a promising opportunity, and you can’t afford to miss it.”
Lindsay was startled, and it showed on her face. “But I don’t need a store,” she said. “I just want to stay by Matthew’s side. I’m not interested in anything else, and I’ve never even considered opening a business.”
“You silly girl!” Betsey scolded her. “Why settle for a dead-end job when you can be your own boss? Even if the shop doesn’t work out, you can always sell the property and make a profit from it. Don’t you realize that this is a Prosperity Group property? Just flipping it would make you a fortune. And if you really don’t want it, you can always give it to Robin. We’re all family. He will never let you suffer.”
Lindsay sneered inwardly at that, but she had to admit that Betsey’s proposal was rather tempting.
She didn’t have any assets of her own, after all, while Stella had her studio and a growing network of influential connections. Lindsay needed to find a way to outshine her. Perhaps this store was just the opportunity she needed.
Soon after, Matthew arrived.
His commanding presence instantly silenced the room.
He walked to the table with steady, purposeful strides and took a seat. His back was ramrod straight, and he exuded a cold and imposing aura.
Robin shrank back like a frightened quail. Despite his usual arrogance, he instinctively felt small in the face of the forbidding Matthew.
Betsey, too, was visibly daunted and didn’t dare to make a sound.
It was Leona who broke the silence first. She plastered a smile on her face and said, “Thank you for facilitating Robin’s release, Matthew. We didn’t mean to cause so much trouble when we went to your grandparents’ house. Please consider this meal an apology from our family to yours.”
Matthew’s brows furrowed slightly. “I had nothing to do with Robin’s release,” he clarified in an indifferent tone.
