Chapter 1670:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
Leona and Betsey exchanged a look of surprise. Across the table, Lindsay was just as stunned, though she quickly regained her composure.
Their bewilderment did not escape Matthew’s notice. He found their reactions odd, but chose not to voice it.
“It doesn’t matter how it happened,” Leona said, trying to smooth things over. “The important thing is that Robin is free now.”
She deftly shifted the topic to Lindsay, saying, “I had just joined the Wheeler family when Lindsay was sent to live with the Clark family. I’ve only seen her a handful of times. Back then, I wanted to take her back to raise her myself, but Lucia wouldn’t allow it. I thought that… Well, the Clark family didn’t have many heirs, and Lucia did need someone by her side. Besides, it was the last wish of Lindsay’s grandmother before she died, so I reluctantly stepped back.”
Matthew listened in silence, his expression unreadable. As the seconds ticked by, the air in the room grew awkward, until it was thick and heavy with tension.
Eager to end the meal, Robin said bluntly, “Lindsay is planning to open a shop. You should help her, Matthew.” His tone was demanding and unapologetic, as though it was a matter of course, even expected of Matthew.
Matthew’s expression remained blank, but he slowly turned his gaze to Lindsay.
Lindsay was horrified by Robin’s rudeness. When she caught Matthew’s glance, she didn’t hesitate to scold Robin. “How can you say that? Where are your manners?”
Robin shrugged casually, his lips curling into a dismissive smirk.
Sensing the tension, Leona intervened. “Matthew, you’re well aware of Lindsay’s situation. She used to be your assistant, but there isn’t much she can do now that she’s bound to a wheelchair. In fact, she’s the one needing your help these days. We just thought that giving her a business of her own would help her regain some independence. It can lighten your load as well.”
Matthew turned to Lindsay and asked, “Is this what you really want?”
She lowered her head slightly, looking hesitant and maybe a little fearful. “I… I do want to keep myself busy. It would help to take my mind off my situation. I learned how to make desserts during my free time in school. If it’s possible, I would love to open a dessert shop.”

“You see?” Betsey quickly chimed in. “Matthew, our Lindsay has been through so much. And with her legs, well… Giving her something to do would keep her spirits up. Managing a small business would give her a purpose. It’s certainly a much better prospect than being stuck at home all day.”
“I understand,” Matthew said with a small nod. “I’ll talk to Fernando and have him make the arrangements.”
Betsey’s eyes twinkled with anticipation. “There’s a great spot over on Frost Avenue! It’s a high-traffic area, and it’s bustling with people all throughout the day. It’s a popular hangout among upper society too, so it’s perfect for new businesses.”
Matthew said nothing in reply, but the air grew distinctly thick again. The weight of his authority and power fell heavily in the room, making Lindsay increasingly antsy with every silent second that passed.
“Anywhere will do, honestly,” she hurriedly said. “I don’t have much capital, anyway, and I most definitely can’t afford a property from Prosperity Group. I just need a place to start, that’s all.”
Worried that the opportunity might slip away, Robin blurted out, “What’s with the attitude, Matthew? Lindsay sacrificed her legs to save you. All she’s asking for is a store in a prime location. Are you seriously going to deny her something so trivial? Aren’t you worried that people would call you an ingrate if word of this gets out? Your reputation will be tarnished.”
Lindsay frowned. “Stop it, Robin! I saved Matthew of my own accord. I’m not looking for any kind of compensation, so quit with that kind of talk.”
