Chapter 770:
🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙 🍙
As soon as the vehicle halted, Katherine stepped out with a nanny. Katherine looked as if she had come in a rush. Her skirt had small folds, like she hadn’t had time to fix it. Little Jillian squirmed in her grasp, shifting restlessly as though she felt discomfort. Drawn by instinct, Julian approached.
Katherine saw him and stood still, waiting. Julian walked closer, though he kept his movements composed, his eyes focused on Katherine and Jillian.
“Weren’t you supposed to be at the hospital?”
He had been thinking about them all day. He had nearly left to visit Jillian himself.

Katherine replied, “She started feeling better after taking her meds and didn’t want to stay at the hospital, so I brought her here.”
At that moment, Jillian lifted her face and turned to Julian.
Julian looked at her too, his expression filled with concern. For no clear reason, Jillian’s mouth quivered, and she began crying loudly. She raised her arms, asking Julian to carry her.
Julian lifted her quickly, awkwardly patting her back. She looked like the sweetest child, but her wails were sharp and piercing, like an alarm. He wasn’t sure how to calm her. He continued patting, worried she might choke on her sobs.
“Why is she crying this much? Is she sick again?” he asked.
Katherine let out a breath. “She’s just in a bad mood.”
The wind was strong outside, so Julian shielded her while walking toward the house. As they moved, he instinctively used one hand to hold hers. Katherine was startled.
Half a second later, Julian noticed and let go abruptly. “You should come along,” he said plainly. “I can’t take care of her by myself.”
Katherine touched her fingers lightly, stayed silent, and walked beside him.
Eloise had forgotten a great deal, but not when it came to Katherine. Everything about her remained vivid. So when Katherine appeared without warning, Eloise stood frozen, startled like an animal sensing danger too late.
Katherine offered a warm smile. “Hi, Eloise.”
Emotion rushed up too quickly. Eloise turned her face away, blinking rapidly to regain control. The bitterness between them had dissolved with time.
She sniffled softly, then said awkwardly, “Please, sit. I’ll go call my dad.”
Halfway across the room, she paused and glanced back. “Have you had anything to eat?”
Katherine gave a small nod. “Yes, I already had lunch.”
“Okay then.”
Without another word, Eloise hurried off.
Katherine, knowing Laurence’s health wouldn’t allow him to come down easily, carried Jillian upstairs. The little one wasn’t looking well, and before long, Laurence signaled for the nanny to take her out.
A heavy medicinal scent clung to the room, pressing down on the air and making it feel oddly sterile. Katherine remained beside him, quietly offering her presence.
Laurence studied her face for a while, a distant tenderness softening his features. He eased back into the pillows and said with a faint smile, “Kathy, I thought you might never return… that I wouldn’t get another chance to see you.”
“Is that even possible?” she replied gently. “You’re not going anywhere anytime soon.”
A wave of gratitude moved through him. “It means a lot, that you still chose to come.”
He was slipping, slowly, but having his granddaughter here made the weight of that truth feel lighter.
