I struggle against the guards as they force me deeper into the cells.
The smell alone makes my stomach churn. Between the dead bodies and the blood, it is hard to determine which is worse.
As we approached the end cell gate, my father stood waiting, his chosen mistress of the month at his side. His stare was blank — but that was how he had been ever since that night. I hated him for what he did to my mother. The way he treated her, and me, and everything around him, all stemmed from the fact that she could not give him a son.
The guards guided me to the gate and hurled me into the cell as though I were nothing. I landed with a hard thud and rolled until my back slammed into the wall. I groaned as pain shot through me.
The worst part was that the impact had reopened old wounds — the ones his mistress had given me just a few hours ago. Blood soaked through the thin, worn top I had on.
A heavy thud echoed down the corridor, and I heard footsteps rushing toward the cell. “What the hell, Alpha?” a voice boomed as it drew nearer. The footsteps stopped. I looked up to find Gamma Ryan standing at the gate, his eyes narrowing as they found me — then softening the moment he truly saw me.
“She’s just a child,” he shouted.
My father’s hand shot out and closed around his throat. “Enough, Gamma,” he gritted out. “She stole from Madaline. She needs to pay.”

My eyes cut to his mistress. A sinister smirk played at her lips. She knew exactly how to wrap my father around her finger. She was his favourite — though that could always change.
My father was a ruthless Alpha and an even worse father. I had been born into a werewolf pack with only half the wolf abilities and no wolf of my own. But I was also part of something else — something my mother had meant to explain to me one day. That day never came. My father and the woman standing before me had killed her when I was ten. I had seen everything, and afterward I was forced to live in the basement of the pack house, never permitted to leave unless someone accompanied me at all times. So the idea of me stealing from my father’s whore was far-fetched at best. He locked me away as though I were nothing.
From the time I was born, my mother and I had been placed in a section of the house far from the other pack members. With only the Gamma family assigned to us, it was just the two of us. We had a small apartment with very little in it, but we managed.
I shifted slightly and leaned against the wall to ease the pain in my back, watching the two of them.
Gamma Ryan had been loyal to my mother and me since my birth, and I knew I could rely on him. He was the only one who had ever brought me new clothes and books to read. I had nothing to my name — and I mean nothing.
My father’s expression hardened as his eyes settled on me. “You will stay in here until I see fit,” he growled.
“But Alpha, she couldn’t have done anything,” Gamma Ryan pleaded. “She was locked in the basement. I heard from one of the guards that they had to kick the door down just to get to her.”
My father turned his attention to Gamma Ryan and lunged, slamming him against the wall. My eyes widened as his growl filled the corridor. “Enough,” he gritted out. “She may not have stolen anything, but she still deserves to live in this place.”
My heart sank. How could my father be so cruel?
Madaline glanced over at me with a look that could cut glass, then turned back to him. “I think we should tell them, babe,” she whispered, and my father looked at her with a softness he had never once shown me.
I felt sick.
My father released Gamma Ryan and turned to face me. His eyes flickered between his wolf and his own, as they always did. “Madaline is pregnant,” he said, his gaze fixed on mine.
My stomach tightened. Pregnant? No — that means…
Madaline’s smile widened as she watched the realization settle over me. “It means I will give the Alpha his heir,” she said cheerfully. “Unlike your mother, I will give him a son. Not a pathetic daughter — and certainly not a wolfless one.”
She giggled, resting her hand against her stomach. “This will be the son of the Alpha.”
I let out a short, quiet snigger.
“Do you think your child would actually be accepted as heir?” I blurted out. “What if you have another girl? We both know how he treats them.”
Madaline’s face drained of color as she looked at my father. He ignored her and fixed his glare on me. “You ungrateful bitch,” he gritted out. “I gave you a home. I never hurt a child.”
“No,” I muttered. “You let your guards do it.”
